I was hoping to get some advice in regards to the best course of action to seek in relation to my current situation. I will start with my background and history.
Im currently 23, single, in excellent shape, employed full time for a huge conglomerate (sales) and make decent pay with solid benefits, 401k, stock option plan, and other perks. I graduated from high school with so-so grades, nothing spectacular,(I have grown up since then). After high school I went to college in Florida to study Marine Science. I pretty quickly got caught up in the business world. I switched my major to business management. I have been to several schools since then (new jersey, Downstate NY, and currently in NYC), and have bonced around a bit with Jobs also. I have a total of 60 credits in general education and no associates degree. I am employed full time and go to school at night, work reimburses me for school. It is going rather slowly with about 2-3 classes per semester. I have a dwai from early 2006. No other criminal convictions. I holp open water and advanced open water diver certificsations. I enjoy boating and have a sincere interest in marine science, navigation, and in general being in or around the water. I just feel comfortable in the water. I was inerested in the CSPI program. Can I get in with that DWAI conviction? My work described above seems great but I dont like what I do. I feel the need to serve a better purpose and do something in line with my physical capabilities and mental abilities. I would be willing to sacrifice pay cuts for a more rewarding career. I prefer to feel better about what I do. Any feedback as to guidance, experience, or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. If you guys need some more info please dont hesitate to ask if it could help determine a good course of action. P.S. Im talking to a recruiter Tuesday. Thanks!!!!! |

Simple advice.. Be completely honest (not that you wouldn't be anyway).
The recruiter can only give good information based on what you provide in the form of initial background info (medical, education, civil and criminal). The more complete you are the more valid the answers and info from the recruiter. |

I answered this in another forum, but with the Alcohol charge, even if it is less than a DUI, will make your competitive edge very small. CSPI is a great program and is very competitive. CPO Kalbach |

I only know of one guy who got accepted to OCS with a DUI conviction. He spent more than five years trying to reverse the affects the DUI had on his career so he could put bars on his shoulders. He did a lot of volunteer work, and believes that this may have helped significantly. By the way, he was also Active Duty Enlisted and made his way through the ranks and became a very influential "A" School instructor.
From reading your post, it seems that you aren't quite sure what you want to do with your life. There are a lot of people who will apply for OCS when you do, and many of them really want it and will do anything to get it. You should be considering finding new ways to be as competitive as possible for this program. Having a job, going to school, and being in excellent shape are all good qualities, but there are people who you will be competing against for that program who have the same qualifications as you plus prior service, volunteer time, awesome grades, Eagle Scout, etc... Good luck. |

That's interesting especially considering the very first ARI as an O means dismissal......

A few more steps into the process....
Got a heart murmur checked out today. I was told i had one when i was a baby...It is now gone. No heart ailments at all says doc. Dentist today says i have 2 cavities, and should prob have the 4 wisdom teeth pulled. Cavities are being filled next week. DWAI disposition on its way, recruiter said i may need a waiver for it. I was suprised to see how interested they were with the initial charges along with the end result (or conviction). Are traffic infractions a serious issue? (such as tickets; non-moving or moving) I plan on going back to my recruiter with the dwai disposition, good news about the heart murmur and the dentist feedback. Hopefully he can give me a pretty good idea of my prequalification and set me up to go to meps. |

This is because some people have good lawyers that get charges reduced because of technicalities or other reasons. Just because it's reduced doesn't mean the person didn't do it. Any law infraction is serious to the Coast Guard. We ENFORCE federal law, if an applicant can't even enforce laws on themselves, how can they enforce on others? CPO Kalbach |
