Hey, I posted earler, but cannot find the post..
anyway, Last week I made an appt for this Friday to meet with a recruiter. I want to enlist full time.
I am afraid that I may have ruined my chances; as, I was arrested for DUI on Monday night.
Any advice?

Look for another job. Your DUI is going to stop you from enlisting. Your poor judgement will now cost you your career choice.

You know everyone makes mistakes. The thing you need to do is go and talk to a recruitor and see what your options are. On here you can get anything from 1 answer to 50 answers of what some people "think" are the correct answer. I saw on your other post, someone replied that the Coast Guard will take anyone, this statement is very untrue. I've seen many people turned away for various things. They don't take just anyone and as far as a DUI, I don't know what the answer to that is. I would say probably disqualifying, again, just what I "think" so to be sure...see a recruitor!

Good Luck!!!

You are DQ for one year past the last court action on your charge (assuming this is the only infraction you have on your record). You will be further DQ'ed for any other infraction. If you want to enlist, keep your nose clean. Call the Recruiter you have an appointment with and let him/her know what happened.

Yes mistakes can be made, but breaking laws that are known throughout the the land via public service messages, commercials etc that's a problem. The Coast Guard enforces laws, if the applicants cannot enforce them on themselves first, then there's a problem.

DUI recently = no options at this time. Call the recruiter before the appointment, that way no one's time is lost.

Stay out of trouble, do your time. Next time you have a drink, walk, call a friend, a cab or just stay put. Everyone's life will be safer. CPO Kalbach

John - speaking of that - have you taken a bus downtown in the 1st Ave / 7th street area yet? Spent a lot of time down that way when I lived in the TCs.

I saw this trend and i thought id like to add my experience on my process joining the USCG Reserve.
Im 31 yrs old, i have 64 college credits, established career. I had my knees scoped and was PDQ'd. Well i did the waiver process. I had to go through Honolulu MEPS. What i had to do is go to a doctor and have a FE (functional Evaluation) done, I had my sugreon write a letter, the doctor that performed the FE and i had CPO. MC's, WO, and Commanders i knew in the Coast Guard from working along side of them on my civilian career. It has taken me 6 months so far and i have had my waiver for entry OK'd, just have to find a spot and im off to my 2 week indoc (March 13th, 2008). It took ALOT of work to get a waiver,it was worth it, would i do it agian? HELL NO. But i will say that the coast guard has the highest standards of personal and by far is the best service to join.

Keep your appointment, but do let them know about the DUI and you still want this and will prove it by staying "clean" for a year. Or even better than that you will take a college class or 2, teach little league soccer, help little old ladies across the street etc…. Tell the recruiter you want to EARN a spot next year. A year will go by fast and if you mess up again you will just save the Coast Guard some money by not having to kick you out at a latter date.
