i've been serving 6 yrs in the usaf and i'm looking to join the uscg. i have many questions if someone could please answer them. first off, i'm really interested in port security/LE, what ratings include this field of work in AD?
The Port Security rate is a reserve rate. Depending what type of unit you are at almost everyone does some type of LE. Now if you read back through the recruiting topics you will find many of your answers you are looking for. Good Luck
thanx, i knew it was a reserve rate, my question was what rates offer duties in patroling the water and/or boarding ships for inspections. im just trying to narrow down what rates to choose for a career. please reply.
Reading in this outfit is fundamental. As said before read through the recruiting topics and you will find most of your answers. Not trying to be an AH but you will find that in the Guard looking up the answer is your best bet. Again good luck
The USCG being a rather small group you will find just about any rate can be involved in LE. A cook on a 378 can be a boarding team member right along with a quartermaster, machinist mate, operations specialist etc...you however seem interested in port security. I would have to say by far the most involved rate for LE would probably be a Boatswains mate (BM) and Machinist mate (MK). Good Luck

BM/MK are the largest ratings in the Coast Guard, so they do alot of the LE/boardings. As someone else posted, all 18 of the career fields can do LE/boardings, some more than others. I was one of those Food Service Specialsits on a 378' cutter that did boardings. Remember, LE/boardings are only 1 of the missions in the Coast Guard. You've also got SAR, Environmental, Aids to Navigation, Homeland Security. Research is definately key and looking things up makes them stick. CPO Kalbach
thanx for replying. another question i have is since i'm serving as a jet engine mech. in the usaf and wanting to cross over to the uscg, do i have to choose a rate that utilizes my skills as a mech. or can i pick any rate i want? also, do you know any info. on the new LE rating for active duty?

I'm guessing your AFSC isn't going to cross to a Coast Guard Aviation job anyway, so retraining would be in your cards. If you are an E-4 in the AF then you'd enlist as an E-3 and be retrained. h60 posted the 6 years or less because you can't join the Coast Guard as an E-3 with more than 6 years active duty.
