PO1 Kalbach (and other esteemed knowledgable Coast Guardsman)

Just wanted to clarify a few questions I had.

1. If you go into the USCG as a non-rate when does your 4 year commitment start. I thought I read somewhere that depending on your A-School )HS possibly) your time started over after graduating A-School. Any info on this would be appreciated.

2. I know I need to loose some weight and increase my PT standards in order to be enlisted. Would it be better to contact a recruiter now - be upfront with the details and then call back when I´m ub regs or just wait until I'm in regs? Thank you ever so much for your time and help.

2. If you start the recruitment process now, and run / work out religiously until you go, you'll surely be able to get into shape. It's probably good to start it soon, in case you hit a snag. You can start getting things sorted out sooner rather than later.

I don't know about #1 - I too am interested to know, since I always assumed the 4 years started when you go to boot camp.

ANSWER: all 5 branches have an initial 8 year military service obligation. For active there is a 4 year active and 4 year inactive contract, and a 6 year active and 2 year inactive. The day you swear DEP starts your 8 year service obligation, the day you ship to basic starts your active duty committment. No starting over once you go to A school, it all counts.

ANSWER: it would be best to call a recruiter now and make sure there are no other issues that will prevent you from joining. You can find out exactly how much weight you will need to lose as well. Recruiter can't process you until you lose the weight.

Chief,
I thought, and i know people that had too me one of them, that you have either 1) re-up to do a full 2 years at your next unit or 2) some people have had to re-up and complete a full 4 year commitment at their next unit.

a few at this station, mostly bms oddly, had to extend after a school for a whole 4 years. and the mks just 2 years...

*shrug*

You are talking re-enlistment or extension, I'm talking initial enlistments times. CPO Kalbach
