I really want to be a rescue swimmer but I'm concerned about security clearance. I don't want to join and find out I can't get it. What are some sure fire things that will disqualify me? Can you give me as many details as you can as to what exactly the security check will include? Thanks
lol yeah I know the way I worded my original post would make you think that but really there is no reason that I know of. I just don't want to sign up for 8 years with hopes of becoming an AST and of all things not pass the secret security clearance. I have never been arrested or had any troubles with the law at any time in my life. Like I said I have to know what would possible keep me from clearance if I make it far enough.
Lying about pretty much anything is a real easy way to not receive or lose a security clearance. Financial irresponsibility is a big no-no as well. Lots of contacts with foreign nationals, family (like if your parents were not US citizens) or otherwise could also cause you problems.
Here's one of the strange things about security clearances ... you might not even know you're in line for one.
After ten years of swingin' a wrench, I took a break and went ashore to an MSO. As the senior enlisted, I took on a lot of collaterals, and some moderately heavy duty port security stuff. Needless to say, about a year or two down the line, I discovered that I had been granted an interim clearance, then cleared for a perm by the command. Never even suspected ...

Make sure you list everything it asks for an the SF86. A Coast Guard recruiter will be able to tell you if you will have problems getting a clearance. Flight phyiscals are another possible road block. CPO Kalbach

There is something called the "ADJUDICATIVE GUIDELINES FOR DETERMINING ELIGIBILITY FOR ACCESS TO CLASSIFIED INFORMATION." The latest edition was released in December 2005. All military services and federal agencies are required to use the "Guidelines" for granting security clearances.
