I'm currently in the Army and I want to transfer to coast guard. I'm a SGT/E5 and my MoS is 92A (logistical spc.), i guess thats an equivalent to CG's storekeeper. My question is, once i move to CG will i get a rank reduction even if my job in the Army is similar to CG's SK? If I do, what rank will i come in as?

Any Army prior service around here? Maybe I can get some insights about the transiton to CG. Thanks

CPO Kalbach will have the most up-to-date information about the PITSTOP program and the PO Determination packet. Of course if you want you can shoot me an email and I will answer your questions as best I can. I am in both global and AKO.

I was an active duty E5 (63J20) in the Army prior to joining the CG. Good luck!

Your prior service MOS needs to be critical to the Coast Guard. SK is not a critical rating at this time. You MOS would most likely not transfer to SK anyway. Not many Army MOS's do.

The determination however is not made by the recruiter if the MOS is critical to the Coast Guard, that is made by the Rating Force Master Chief(E-9) of the particular rating.

What you are looking at is enlisting as E-3 and going to PITSTOP and either going on to an A school or your first duty station. CPO Kalbach, prior Navy/Army Guard.

I have a similar question but from the Officer side of the fence. I will be ETSing with 7 years as an Infantry officer (0-3). What is my marketability/eligibility for jobs in the CG?? If I went back to College for a second degree, would I be eligible for any aviation programs?

Sir, the Direct Commission Aviator program is the prior service program for Aviators. Of course the Officer has to be an Aviator. You should go to www.gocoastguard.com and check out the Officer programs.

Thanks for the info!!! Coastie63J20 and PO1Kalbach.

I was looking at www.gocoastguard.com, it says that if you are a prior service transfering to the CG and your job/skill/mos is not in the ORL you will be enlisting as an E-1. Currently i'm an E-5/SGT (Army), so does this mean if i come in to CG and get a different job i will still be coming in as an E-1? Can you please help me on this? thanks.

If you completed a contract and are E4 or above, you'll come in as E3.

As down posted, being paid E-4 or higher when you ETS/EAOS you will enlist E-3. CPO Kalbach

To add to this, I was told today by a Coast Guard recruiter that if I had over 6 years of active duty then I'm not eligable to join the CG at all. I'll have 8 years when all is said and done. Is this true should I forget about trying to swap over to the CG? Didn't know if anyone was in the same boat reading this thread.

I am going to take a shot and see if I learned anything from Chief K:

What he meant was that unless your MOS translates to a CG Rating and an RFMC approves a Rate Determination Package (they're all SOBs, especially the OS RFMC), you can not come in with more than 6 years of service.

Master Chief hit it. Recruiting Manual states, E-3 below with more than 6 years ineligible. Enlisting E-4 and above with approved rate determination pacakge up to 14 years. CPO Kalbach
