"...most of it paid off by year's end" and "..a library fine." Are you on a plan or doing this on your own? I'm not sure how it will affect you but it sounds like you're moving in the right direction. The sooner you get them paid off the better off you'll be. Your library sends fines to a collection agency? Tough town.

I'm on a plan. I haven't met with my recruiter yet as I'm waiting to have more paid off before I do so. Is that a good decision? Does anyone know what they will be looking for during the credit check? Is there a credit check for every recruit or just those that need a security clearance? I know that most services look at a 30/100 DI ratio or something along those lines. My debt is small enough to fit under any of those guidelines so my main question is whether the credit check is based on some ratio like that or as an evaluation of general financial responsibility.

Your credit may effect a security clearance, just make sure you disclose all your debt and the collections to your recruiter. CPO Kalbach

So it shouldn't effect my initial enlistment? I will be available for boot camp after the new year and would like to go ASAP. Should I go to my recruiter now or would it be better to wait until I have reduced the debt to a smaller amount? Also, for DEP, are you ensured any sort of time frame for your departure? I would love to enlist ASAP but can't leave until after december. Is there a possibility that if I enlisted now i would be called up before then? Thanks for your help.

Nope.

Tell your recruiter this.

Your recruiter may call and ask if you want to leave earlier. Thanks for your help.
Best bet, contact a recruiter NOW and see if you are even basically qualified to join. Then go from there. If you wait, slots can fill up fast for when you "want" to go. CPO Kalbach
