Basic Training
Posted
I've got a friend who's wanting to enlist in the Army. He's already taken the ASVAB and letter of intent. Does he have any obligations at this point in time? He wants to be able to make it out on his own, but I'd like to show him some other options that may be a bit more family friendly like the Coast Guard because he's married and has a kid.

Thanks

I do not believe he is obligated unless he has been to MEPS for his physical and has entered the delayed enlistment program (DEP).

What the heck is a "letter of intent"? If he's raised his right hand, then he's in DEP and we can't touch/talk to him. CPO Kalbach

Am i confused on DEP then because every recruiter i have talked to has said that dep is like you are qualified and ready to go but normaly you do not take the oath untill a few days before you ship to basic and can drop DEP anytime.

With the Delayed enlistment program (DEP) you have taken the oath and are just waiting for your ship day to basic training. You can be held to your 365 day DEP contact or enlisted in the National Guard if you do not join the service which you have entered the DEP with. Most of the time they can/will release someone from the DEP.

You can request DEP discharge, the service doesn't have to honor that request until 365 days have passed though. The recruiters don't tell you that. If a person DEP's then another service recruiter cannot speak to you about joining their service(it's called poaching). CPO Kalbach

When I went into the Air Force DEP, they told me that as soon as I signed the papers, I was in the Inactive Reserves. So, I signed the papers in July 1998, but didn't go to basic until November 1998. My 4 year active enlistment ended in November 2002. And my IRR time ended in July 2006.
