sorry for swamping the cg message boards over the last few days with these questions but my recruiter is impossible to get in contact with. literally i have not been able to contact him in over 3 weeks. im tempted to walk into a navy recruiting office so you guys are my only source of info. so here goes

just for some back ground i am currently a 23yo police officer in virgina. i have a ba in criminal justice. originally i wanted to be an officer in the military but due to my gpa and degree type i decided to go in elisted first and then apply for ocs in the future.

after doing some research on the boards i have stumbled across several programs: petty officer selectee program, direct petty officer program and rebi to be specific. my questions are what are the requirements for these prgrams. i have both brouchure versions of this answer but i really want to know what are the requirements particularly for the petty officer selectee program. what is posted on the cg website and on these boards are rather vague.

i only have 2 years police experience so i dont think i would qualify for the direct petty officer program therefore the petty officer selectee program attracts me. but other than being between the ages of 17-30 what else are they looking for?

also with either of these programs what is your pay rate if accepted? e-4? e-5?

are these programs only avail for reservist? if so is there anything comparable for active duty?

and last but not least just out of curiosity with 120 college credits/ degree, is it possible to enlist at a higher pay rate regardless of weather or not you participate in one of these programs? i was told by an army recruiter i would join with them as an e-4 just for having my degree and by a navy recruiter that i would go in as an e-3. how about cg. thanks in advance everyone and sorry for the long post.

p.s. i dont even know what REBI is or how it differs from any of the above. at this point in time i am not sure if i want active duty or reserves. right now it is what ever has the best career path for me. plzzz help!

You do realize that the Coast Guard does not have as many recruiters as the other services, and we do get sick, go on vacation, etc. If you "really" want to pursue something in the Coast Guard you can be patient. I waited "6 months" before I was able to join and it was worth the wait.

ANSWER: you need to do what you need to do.

ANSWER: people that are academically/medically qualfied to fill RESERVE jobs in the area they live. It's your basic go to boot camp, get job training and then start drilling at their unit, doing the job they were trained to do. Everyone goes through a prescreen process to make sure they haven't broken the law(to much) minimal drug use, good health, etc.

also with either of these programs what is your pay rate if accepted? e-4? e-5?

Petty Officer select: with your college you'd enlist as E-3, after 6 months and your job training you'd become an E-4

Direct Petty Officer the rank is determined by the amount of experience. Without prior service you'd be looking at E-4 if the PS Rating Force Master Chief says you have enough LEO experience.

are these programs only avail for reservist? if so is there anything comparable for active duty?

ANSWER: these are RESERVE ONLY programs. If you want active duty, then you'd enlist E-3 with your college.

ANSWER: E-3 with 60 semester/90 quarter hours of college.

You are 23, it's up to you to decide what career path you want to take. First thing you need to realize, the Army has over 4,000 recruiters, the Coast Guard has 400 nationwide. Give them a call, leave you name and number, make sure you speak slowly, I don't know how many calls I get and the person wants to speed through the name and number.

thank you for your detailed reply. all of that cleared up about 90 percent of the questions i had. i understand the coast guard is small and has fewer recruiters but MY recruiter in general has not been informative nor available. didnt mean to offend the availability of the recruiters but when you are young and ready to make something of your self sometimes you want to just strike when the iron is hot and the drive is there. i plan on making a lifetime career of this and as a civilian it gets frustrating when your recruiter tells you he has never heard about REBI. i have been working with him for about 3 months now and it is just recently i discovered this message board and obtained some real ansewers. but in any event sorry to offend you po1kalbach and i appreciate you taking the time to educate me on your branch.

There was no offense taken, but alot of folks don't know that Coast Guard recruiting is alot different than DOD recruiting, alot with the size. If you want to make this a career then patience is nescessary, you don't want to make a rush decision on a career choice do you?

What if you recruiter was brand new, they "may" not have heard about REBI. Not all Coast Guard recruiters can recruit reserve either, some can only recruit less than 5 people in their area(me).

Have you asked if there is a Reserve need in your area? Communication is key on both parties. Your local recruiter is going to know your particular situation better than anyone. You have the REBI website, educate your recruiter now. CPO Kalbach
