Okay, I have been considering joining the Coast Guard since Sophomore year of Highschool. Just recently in November of Last year I decided that the Coast Guard was what I wanted to do for a career. I'm kinda in a recruiter transition right now being that my recruiter got transfered to San Diego and I was assigned a new one that I have not met yet ( Reason being that the recruiting office is an hour drive away) When I graduate in June I will be going to MEPS, according to my new recruiter.

Okay so here are my questions- I was homeschooled all my life and according to my recruiter I needed to have 20 college credits in order to join the Coast Guard. This year I did Running Start and I will have 20 credits by graduation, that is all I need to get done in order to join correct?

My next question would be that while I was never diagnosed with any illness I had back problems for awhile in my younger years which are now gone, I swim every day and work out with no problems. Will this get me medically disqualified? Also over Spring break I was in the hospital because I slipped and fell off of the top of a semi truck onto concrete, is there any limits on how long since your release from a hospital to when you can join?

I've got a ton of other questions but I'll save them for a trip up to the recruiting office. (By the way I am in Washington)

Were you treated for the back problems? If so you need ALL the medical records for them. You'll need the hospital records for the slipping as well. Hopefully you've let your recruiter know about the med issues. You should take the records with you when you visit, that way your process won't get bogged down. The Washington state recruiters are awesome, I was stationed with most of them.

Bring your running start credits as well. CPO Kalbach

Thank you for the response, I was treated with physical therapy/occupational therapy but other than that I just did Bio Feedback. My last recruiter said non of that would be a problem. I will definatly take my running start credits (Not the best grades in the world) Although I am making 25 credits by the end of this quarter.

Other than that I have a question about your police/driving record- I have had one ticket that I got deferred (49 in a 30) Do I need to disclose that or not? I don't have a problem with disclosing anything I'm just wondering if I need to bring a copy of the ticket or anything.

You should bring the paperwork into your recruiter for the ticket. One speeding ticket should not be a problem but he is going to need to see that it was taken care of. MK1

Read (or listen too) every question asked carefully.

Most questions are very specific, ie: Have you EVER been charged, arrested or convicted of.......... (excluding .......)

Answer truthfully. If in doubt, put it down. Error on this side of openess and you will be fine.

Need the records, "may not" be a problem but that's for the docs at MEPS to make the call. Traffic ticket needs to be disclosed and taken care of one way or another, can't be outstanding to enlist. CPO Kalbach

I got it deferred so I figured I was fine being that I payed the administrative fee. Does the Coast Guard consider it outstanding if you are still under the one year period? (The one year period being the courts decision that you could not get another ticket for one year otherwise you would have to pay both tickets)

So I cannot join until either the one year is up or I pay the ticket?

That is correct. You need to have it taken care of. That means paid off or complete your deferred adjudication.

Also after speaking with the Home School Legal Defense Association about why I was required to have 20 college credits while other highschool graduates were not I was informed of this- http://nche.hslda.org/docs/news/hslda/200707030.asp According to this I only need to score better than a 50 AFQT on the ASVAB in order to be a Tier 1 candidate. Why was I told I needed 20 college credits?
