Ok, I have been speaking with a recruiter here in my area(Central Florida, i live in Cocoa Beach Area(shuttle launch site is about 10 miles from where I live, and i go to the Orlando Recruiting station) for about 2 months now, and I have taken the ASVAB(got a 96), and just went to the MEPS station last week for the physical. I was told that after the Physical(assuming everything checked out, which it did) that I would be able to go ahead with signing up, however, my recruiter is almost impossible to get ahold of(or anyone at that office).

So my question is this: Is this normal?
The only times I have been able to reach them is between 8-9am and that only very rarely.

Im kind of stressing out, because I'm very anxious to sign up but I can never reach anyone!

You were not given your recruiters cell phone number?

No, when I asked about it(because a friend that went into the army got his recruiters cell number and it made everything a lot easier), he said he didn't give his out.

Oh well, I guess i just have to keep trying to contact them :-\

Maybe he went on leave, had a family problem, or is just busy. He may be waiting to get your results from MEPS. You are not the only applicant he is processing. Sit back and chill out. He didn't forget you, that isn't how CG recruiters work. Before you know it you will be stepping off the bus in Cape May and wondering what the hell you have gotten your self into.

The most reoccuring statement on Fredsplace: "I couldn't get ahold of my recruiter" I didn't have a problem and if I did and needed to speak to him that bad I asked to speak to the recruiter in charge or someelse!

I know this does not work for everyone due to being a long distance away, but it worked for me. I NEVER talked on the phone to my recruiter. Neither him or the RIC ever picked it up. Right or wrong, I walked in unannounced without an appointment (dressed for success as well). This was MY future career at stake, so I grabbed the bull by the horns and took control of the situation.

Please keep in mind too that if they are not answering their office phone, it probably means that they are out doing their job recruiting. Leave a message for your recruiter and I'm sure once he has a minute he will get back to you. I'm glad that you are anxious to join, but you are about to enter the "hurry up and wait" mode now. Good luck to you.

Yeah just a little. Remember that Orlando recruiting office is one of the busiest recruiting office in the Coast Guard. One of my close friends is a recruiter there and I can hardly get a hold of him for non work things. Since you are in the wait mode take advantage of some of your resources at home. You have 5 main units there in the Cocoa Beach area. STA Port Canaveral, CGC Confidence, CGC Vigilant, CGC Shrike, and MSD Port Canaveral. Use some free time and visit some of those units. I'm on the CGC Confidence and feel free to drop by anytime.

How would I go about getting out there, I was under the impression, from fishing out there as much as I do, that the trident basin and turning basins were off limits to civilians, I can remember that little port security boat running at lease 1 person off every time I've been out there.

Start with a phone call, see if you can arrange for someone to show you around.

You are right, it is offlimits to boaters when there is a cruise ship in. Just get off the exit as if you are going to the Carnival cruise terminal. Go past the cruise ships to the next light (Grouper Road). Turn right and then after the makeshift tunnel on the righ make a right. The station will be on your left. A phone call to the ship to set up a tour would be best (321)784-8176. You can ask for me, BM1 Groseclose, or if I'm not there, the OOD.

Good day all. Just thought that all concerned would like to know that this young man has an appointment to meet with his recruiter where "all" of his concerns will be addressed. Even though he had his ASVAB and physical completed in two months...he's impatient. The reality is that there are only 4 recruiters with responsibility for over 7 counties and hundreds of applicants seeking enlistment; you do the math. No one applicant is more important then the next; there is a procedure that needs to be followed and all applicants have to go through it. Just as this applicant feels he wants to join right away, multiply that by 20 a week asking the same thing; it's just not going to happen. So patience is mandatory. This isn't the Army, but I do have some connections if speed is what you want. Also, thanks to those who came to the defense of this office, obviously some of you understand the task at hand. As always, there are two sides to every story. Have a Great Coast Guard Day!

Once the young man has been in awhile he will begin to undderstand that "Hurry up and Wait" is a motto that crosses all military services.

Makes me feel a little better. I have called my local office several times at different times and ALWAYS get the voice mail. I even called the 800 # and it sent me to the same voice mail. I did choose one recruiter's extension at random and left my cell phone, and called another day and left my name/address for literature in the general box.

Hopefully will hear soon.
