I am seriously considering applying for the DCO program in the Coast Guard Reserve. I am prior service Air Force and meet all of the basic requirements for the program.
I don't know that much about the CG, but I get the impression that they put more emphasis on a candidate's academic background, relative to other service branches. I have a masters degree in economics and a masters degree in geology. I am rather flexible on what I would like to do in the Coast Guard Reserve. I would be interested in law enforcement, counter-terrorism, intel, or environmental protection.
Other than working in intel as an Air Force enlisted guy 10 years ago, I have no practical experience or direct academic specialization in any of the above fields.
Would my background even interest the Coast Guard, or should I just not waste my time and go talk to the Navy Reserve instead?

The Coast Guard looks at the "whole person" when it comes to applications for any program. Ok so you have a 2 Masters degrees and a bachelors, what about your leadership experience, your community service, GPA's, how would previous boss's speak of you in leadership roles? Since you are looking at DCO in the Reserve that means the SRDC program, you could do almost anything depending on the need in your area for Officers.
All you can do is submit and application and see if you are picked up. Why would it be a waste of time to see if you could join a service that helps the American people on a daily basis, face to face? CPO Kalbach, prior Navy, Army Guard.
I had a long conversation with the local CG recruiter this afternoon. I've scheduled the physical, and I am starting to put together my package and complete the application.

1/2 the battle, good luck on the application. CPO Kalbach
