I had a hearing test a couple of days ago at the Birmingham VA Hospital, my hearing has gotta a little worse and I will be getting new Hearing Aids. While I was there I asked if there was a treatment for Tinnitus which I didn't belive there was. However they told me that there is a new program that I can try it's put out by a company called Neuromonics and the VA will supply this to veterans at no cost. I will give it a try as the ringing is really bad. I will list a web site for you to go to for more information on this program maybe Military.com won't edited it out as all I am trying to do is help other veterans. Sgt D

I know what you mean, if the people that set the max at 10% for this had to live with the damm ringing then they would sure as heck want it to be more than 10%. Maybe this program will work and somebody will answer the damm ringing. Sgt D Gun

I have tinnitus in both ears and the VA said I can only get a rating of 10% and that both ears are counted as one. This is the only disability that is rated that way by the VA. I know the VFW and other organizations have been fighting the VA in court over this, does anyone know the status of this case?? Last I heard was that they won, however my records still indicate a rating of 10% for tinnitus in both ears.
thanks,

They did win, but the court over turned it and that's the end of that story. Sit back and relax maybe some day someone will answer the ringing. Sgt D

SGTd6970,
Thanks for the reply, as we always said in the Army, I guess we were just awarded the Green Wennie. I would bet the judge never spent one day in military uniform. Life really sucks sometimes.

Yep we got the grand daddy green one on this, as Tinnitus can only get you 10% max. If they had been able to rate each ear then maybe we could have received 20 %. So we just have to hope someday that somebody will answer the ringing. SgtD

I am so with you, I have had Ma-Bell ringing in my ears for over 15 years now 24/7. Every once in a while I get a break in the action and instead of a train in my ears I get the Boeing 747, I can count on one hand the number of times I experienced no noise.
Pray for a cure,
Larry lwagner12@nyc.rr.com

Well I went today for the Neuromonics system, all that happened was I was tested for hearing ranges from 8000 to 10,000 and that is supposed to be were the Tinnitus is at. They set up a range and now have ordered the system for me, I go back in 2 weeks to get it. I did get to see and wear the one they have there, it was classical music and for the first time in over 30 years I did not have the ringing for a few minutes. I can't wait till I get mine. To all those that suffer from Tinnitis, I now have the system from the VA and it's starting to work, in fact I have it on right now and I'm listening to classical music. I have to go back to the VA in about 2 weeks for them to check my progress. This thing has a small SD card in it that tracks the amount of time you use it and at what level you have the volume set at. I'm really impressed so far. The only problem is that my wife loves classic music so I've had to share with her which the VA doctor said that would be no problem....I hope that others will give this a try and let us know how it works for them....Sgt D Beer

Since the DoD appropriations Bill opened up this past April up to 50 million in new research funding for tinnitus 'releated to service in the armed forces'.

This study looks to be promising. See link below.
