Funny you ask... I brought this very thing up to my YN just days ago. Curse I just happend to transfer from Coast (Alameda, CA) to Coast (Atlantic Beach, NC) I beleive that the Per Diem is for food and lodging but I got $565 for the 2,975 miles of travel. So unless you get at least 21mpg (I wanst as fortunate) you'll be spending more than that ammount.

In short, you cant claim the rediculous gas prices, and no they are not giving us any more money for the travel. My advice: if you have a large truck or anything that gets crappy gas mileage... just have it shipped. Plus driving the 40 through the desert wasnt what I would call very exciting.

Unfortunately, MALT (Monetary Allowance in Lieu of Transportation) is not affected by the price of gas. TDY or local mileage, however, is. At least the PCS per diem has gone up over the years!

This is straight from the Per diem committee website:

"The Monetary Allowance in Lieu of Transportation (MALT) (also called the PCS mileage) rate was never intended to reimburse the transportation costs for driving a car. The MALT/PCS mileage rate is a payment for POC travel performed by an eligible traveler based on the official distance between authorized locations and does not reflect the price of gasoline. The TDY mileage rates, on the other hand, are based on the costs to operate a car (gasoline, insurance, etc.) and are intended to reimburse the expense of using a POC for the official Government travel."

So does everyone have a choice if they want to get there car shipped or drive it themselves? Will i be able to drive to my first duty station in CA from WI instead of flying and having my jeep shipped? Wasn't sure how that all worked. Thanks.

The VA pays well for travel... I wen't 205 miles (to Gainesville) , will get a check for $53.58 or so.. filled my car when I got home, it took $35 I think... (should have gotten a receipt).... as long as I break even I'm happy.. I can deal with the "wear & tear" on my car....

Wray... Cool

Who says you can't claim the cost of gas? While I was on Active Duty, I put in a travel claims for a blown engine, the cost to repair/replace it, the cost of new tires, the cost to store my car while I was overseas, and a whole bunch of other stuff. I was told I could not put that on a travel claims, because I would be turning in a false claim if I asked for reimbursment for those things.. I told that person to read the statement where I would sign. It said something to the effect that all my claimed items were true cost/expenditures and I requested to be reimburshed for all that I am entitled to. The key was they were true expenditures invovled in my transfer, I just was not entitled to be reimbursed.

I filled out every travel claim to include every cost, just to show how much out of pocket money transfers cost. Sometimes as a single person it was worse. I was sent overseas isolated duty and had to store my car at my own expense. The Coast Guard told me they would pay mileage towards the direction of my new unit. I was told I could get paid to drive my car from TX to LA and then I could leave it in long term parking at the airport at my own expense. I was going away for a year. Eek

Wray, VA mileage doesn't take into account the wear and tear on your POV. JFTR does, that's why it's $0.505/mile vs the $0.26/mile they pay. That's not good.

Yes you always have a choice BUT the CG will ONLY pay for your vehicle to be shipped if it is OCONUS. You can pay out of your own pocket. I just had a guy out at my unit choose to ship his own vehicle from MI to CA and fly, although the CG did NOT pay for it. It is not authorized unless you go overseas. You will be paid MALT ($0.19/mile) to drive from WI to CA. MALT actually was ($0.20/mile) and they just dropped it not too long ago. I think it's nuts and everyone should be paid more. Hopefully more money will be paid sooner or later, I'm sure with the gas prices the way they are.

just to clarify YNgirls post- the CG will not pay to ship a second car inconus- they will however REIMBURSE a nice chunk of it when you do a travel claim- this HAS to be approved brfore shipping but it can be from 300 and up - for the reimbursement.....

also wanted to add- you can claim any out of pocket moving costs on your taxes.
and you can claim the difference between IRS and MALT.
