Greetings to all,

My wife and I just paid off her car. For us that is a huge load off our backs. We are trying to get much stricter with where we spend our money and how. Does anyone out there have any templates for setting up a budget or advice? Right now we have a credit card debt and school loan.

Thanks in advance,
Hobab

Give the nearest NMCRS office a call near where you are stationed. Even though you are USCG, they will help you with working out a budget...confidentially and free.

Hobab,
i'm not sure where you're stationed at, but check to see if your command has as Command Financial Specialist. This is a Coastie who has been trained to give you the advice/help your looking for and is completly confidential. If you are in the Hampton Roads area, give me an email and I'll hook you up with a really good guy there.

Pay down the smallest bill first. Make minimum payment to the larger bill, and throw all you can at the smaller. You may still have tax advantages with the student loan, but most likely it's the larger of the two debts and and carrying the lowest interest rate. If you are finding that you do have money left over on payday, you should squirrel away 3 to 6 months worth of paychecks in an account that won't charge you a penalty if you have to withdraw. You never know when you find yourself out of work and need the $$. Most investment advisors a. charge a fee, and b. won't start from scratch with you unless you already have an emergency fund set aside, and have no credit card debt.

Read personal finance for dummies by Eric Tyson great book? You can find it in Barns and Noble, and Borders bookstores.
