So, I have a kid on the way and am aiming to gain a little extra dough to pile in my ING Orange Savings account Smile. I'm sure a lot of others would like to hear what some CG folks are doing to earn an extra buck. So, what do you suggest?

I've been offering Coasties a part-time job with my company for about four years. I've found only one who wanted to work afternoons, nights, or weekends. So I gave up asking.

Okay, I'm editing this because I did work with one terrific Coastie. Unfortunately, a set of PCS orders got in the way. (Sorry....)

Come on Brian...

It's okay the afternooners, nights, and occasional week-end convention traffic. But pimping has got to have some benefits!

If you are enlisted how about studying for the SWE and get promoted, it has worked for me. I don't think being away from your family and newborn would be worth it, you never know you might end up on a boat or something in the near future. You might also want to come up with a budget if you haven't already, you possibly have more money than you thought.

Kind of depends whats around... i know a few MKs / FNs that worked at a boat rental place working on the engines and stuff. Personnally I worked security at a bar. Figured I could either be there drinkin... or be there makin money! Look for a place with a benefit... like employee discount or somethign.

We'll we're pretty well budgeted and far from broke or anything like that. It's just simply that, Mo Money for a spanking new Mommy Rocket (Mini Van/SUV) would be nice to achieve. So, maybe a second job isn't best, but perhaps a sweet idea to add cash to the bank on top of what we are drawing in would be appriciated.

well for the last 6 years I ahve worked 2 jobs and I started off with cooking in some diners (wasnt alot of money but was fun) then I moved into sales. I now sell cell phones for my 2nd job.

I usually work 3 days a week and about 17-20 hrs a week. I make 9 dollars a hour plus commission.

my normal pay checks are

300.00 (on the 1st)
600-700 (on the 15th)

There are some weeks that I get that extra day or 2 in a pay period if I am day working or a reservist comes in and takes a watch.

You could probably make more depending on the market you are in as well. I am not the type of person who attacks people with my sales pitch though so I am sure I could get more. Since it isnt my main job I am very honest with customers and usually get every sale that approaches me (while others have people walk away) because they are over doing it or get caught trying to exagerate a bit.

Have you considered bartending. That's what a lot of AD Army do to gain extra cash.

Do you still have to have Command Approval to get another job while AD?

Look into the US CENSUS. The job comes around every 10 years and pays very well. I worked the Census part time in 1999 and I have already taken my entry test for the 2009 Census. Look it up online. They pay very good wages and also pay you for mileage and any work you may do at home...
Check it out!!

I used to work part time as a self employeed handyman. This worked pretty well when I was on a 3 on 3 off sched. I was able to land a deal with a local realestate company in Louisiana to where I would do all the repairs on their rentals. Problably made a good 10k extra in one year doing that. So, if you have any home improvement skills, get a Business license and put an ad in the paper. It really works!

Yes, you have to route a special request chit through your chain of command giving details about the job, such as what type of business and work it is, as well as the hours you are going to be working.
