Getting into gold may have been a good idea before the recession started. Just like bond funds, gold prices usually rise as investors scramble for shelter in a sinking economy. I am planning to pick up a Vanguard Bond fund and buying into gold before the next recession hits in about 12 yrs.
Again, buy low and sell high is the key.

That can be said on most things... a good one that comes to mind is real estate. Of course several people got over confident and lost everything when they couldn't make the payments.

I saw the crash of the dollar 6 years ago and bought gold. It's gettin' a little late; but then again by continuing the present Government fiscal policies six years from now Gold might cost a whole truck load of dollars per ounce. Folks, the dollar is slipping, slipping, and nearly gone. Soon you won't be able to afford foreign made goods. So you might consider purchasing items you need now while you still can.

ETC, well said. I know, I'm always the cynic, however, indulge me for a minute. In a world economic collapse, or general societal breakdown (think Katrina, only nation-wide), gold will be worthless. Buy some until it makes you feel good, but buy more ammo, water, gasoline (not practical to store, I know), canned food, quality American made goods (wool blankets, shovels, flashlights, shotguns, you know, the stuff they handed out in the military during WWII), maybe some dry beans and rice. Anyone else a paranoid survivalist or is it just me? I have been throwing the investment dollars into the "I" - International fund. With so many foreign countries becoming industrialized, I figure that it should be a tide that will continue to rise. Might as well ride it, there ain't no stopping it.
