I think I'm almost there.
Indicators are as follows, in no particular order: 1. Twitching 2. Ulcers 3. More grey than anyone ever had in my family 4. Inpatient 5. Antsy 6. Sore neck 7. Feet hurt 8. Coffee has become a necessity of life, like air, water, food, ect. 9. Restless 10. Miserable 11. Eyes are starting to go 12. Hearing already gone from the many years of engine room watches 13. Hemmroids 14. Sour stomach 15. Chest pains 16. Excessive back hair 17. Our dog said he would kick "my a$$" if I kick him again. 18. Skin flakes 19. Mid life crisis here in the now 20. High Blood pressure 21. Back almost gone 22. Index Finger skin disorder 23. Chronic Indigestion 24. Head and Shoulders shampoo, like coffee, a necessity Love to hear what other's have for their personal indicators that enough is truly, finally enough. chapwood....... This message has been edited. As soon as I would rather leave the harley in the garage instead of using work as an excuse to take two rides a day.
If work gets that bad - that even two harley rides a day don't overcome any frustrations - I am outta here! |

Market yourself, send out a few resumes and see what your options are. If you find something that peaks your interest, make your move.

I'm at 24.5 and going to get the next available
TAPs class. I've been told the TAPs out here by the AF is good and might as well get a jump start though I don't have a ballgame date. |

Good one Wray! For a few years I would say I'd stay in for 20 years, 30 if I like it. Then my tune changed and I would say 20 anyway, and as long after that as I was still having fun. Bottom line is that everyones indicator is a little different, But what I DO know is that you WILL know when your time has come. Sounds like you might be there. I lasted 23 years, no looking back, no regrets ... and I'm still alive 7 years later. Retirement isn't as scary as it seems as you are approaching the big decision as to when. The only advice I can pass along is nothing new ... but have a plan. You don't necessarily need a job ... but have a plan on how you are going to pay your bills, how much you need to earn in a job, if you get one, to maintain your current living situation, what you might want to do for work ... etc. Best of luck to you. --Jim Life is good! |

Well - at your age, you may need to start looking at trike conversions, but hey, it's still the same bike.......

Your list is way too long...that should tell you that you are perhaps past due. Move on.

Never....ever.....never retire!!
Life is boring with no goals...after seeing the pyramids, and climbing Mt. Everest there just needs to be something to engage your mind, or you grow "quaint," and "eccentric." Take it from someone who has RETIRED, TWICE," and is now on a third career. I have finally given up the notion of finding a little cabin on golden pond and fishing until they find my body afloat somewhere.... I will work until the day I die. I like meeting people, talking to them...telling them sea stories...hearing "new" things from them. I need these things to keep my mind nimble and give me piece of mind that I still know what's 'going on.' I invite new people we meet (my wife and I) over for dinners, birthdays, etc., because if you just invite the people you have always known, or known for a number of years, you all will just grow old together and you start talking about the most recent ailment and health problem you've encountered. Borrring.. Never retire. Really. |

Heard someone somewhere say they'd know it was time to retire when they had three bad days in a row at work. Any less than three was "normal".

What I found interesting to myself is the longer I stay in, the more I am enjoying it. I've got 16 years in and really started thinking about what type of career I would pursue after CG life. What I'm finding is that I don't want this roller coaster ride to end. I'll get to 20 and like another poster said above, when the fun stops, I'll retire.

There Ain't No Such Thing As A Free Lunch |
Heck, most of that stuff has to do with the fact that you re approaching the age of dirt. Has nothing to do with when to retire.
Here's my thoughts on it (and I am now FULLY retired). When you have the time in to get your check and you start really hating to go to work, it's time to pull the plug. Just make sure it isn't just because of your current duty station, since that can/does change. And don't forget, pulling the plug with 50% ain't even close to how much better off you will be if you can hold on until you get the 75%. At 50% you might still be in a situation where you have to take a job you don't really like just because you need to make as much money as possible. At 75% you can suddenly be a LOT more selective. |

As was said before, when it's not fun anymore. When I hit the 20 yr. mark I typed out my retirement letter, put it in a picture frame and hung it beside my desk. On the frame were these words "in case of severe stress or intolerable BS break glass" I looked at it for 8yrs. before breaking the glass. Good Luck. Dave
