Please share this with anyone who's had active duty service prior to January
2002 and planning for retirement. In a nutshell it boils down to this: You
qualify for a higher social security payment because of your military
service, for active duty any time from 1940 through 2001(the program was
done away with in January 2002). Up to $1200 per year of earnings credit
credited at time of application - which can make a substantial difference in
social security monthly payments upon your retirement. You must bring your
DD-214 to the Social Security Office and you must ask for this benefit to
receive it!

Soc Sec website:

http://www.ssa.gov/retire2/military.htm

This is something to put in your files for when you apply for Social
Security down the road. It is NOT just for retirees, BUT anyone who has
served on active duty prior to January 2002.

Bruce -
Getting the paperwork together for a trip down to the SS office to start your pay huh? I knew you were close, I just didn't think it was THAT close!

I'll be happy if there still is SS when I get to your age!

Bruce, as I said on www.cgcgiefs.com

Special extra earnings credits are granted for periods of active duty or active duty for training. Special extra earnings credits are not granted for inactive duty training.

quote:
If your active military service occurred

* From 1957 through 1967, we will add the extra credits to your record when you apply for Social Security benefits.
* From 1968 through 2001, you do not need to do anything to receive these extra credits. The credits were automatically added to your record.
* After 2001, there are no special extra earnings credits for military service

This made it around at the 0-6 level about a year ago... I got a copy of it from Mike Jett...I believe it started up in AK.

I have already covered this with Bob Brayman a while back...

Wray... Cool

Phil... I'm gonna grab it all up as soon as I am eligible...

Gee nice to see that the wardroom shared with everyone back then.....like I expected anything different.

And Phil you know what they say, live fast, die young and leave a good looking corpse. Oh sorry, I guess you missed on all 3 of those already.

Bruce,
I think there were several enlisted members on the e-mails I got last year.. I will take a look at them when I get to work tomorrow... I think I have them there. Since it appears there is nothing to be done for most of us, I didn't think it much of a big deal... other than the fact several that didn't read the e-mail or the social security link. Maybe it was too hard for most of them to understand. Wink

Wray... Cool

Wray, are you letting us know in case we served prior to 1968? Because it says that if you served as of 1968 thru 2001, there is no action required from us. Or am I missing something?
