The price they give use per mile to move/ transfer is less than half of what it actually costs when we are at three something a gallon. what is being done to bring the number per mile up to todays costs?

The rates are reviewed and adjusted on a regular basis. You can look at the rates here https://secureapp2.hqda.pentagon.mil/perdiem/trvlregs.html

At .15 per mile your OK as long as you get 20 mpg. In my case I am ok up to about 4.25 a gallon at the pump.

First of all, how many of us really get 20 mpg?

Say i only get 18 and am doing a cross county move, 3000 miles (average price of gas is $3.30 a gallon)

3000k / 18mpg = 166 x $3.30 a gallon =$550 my cost (even if 20 mpg = $495)

3000k x.15 cents a mile = $450 (my reimbursement)

And the cents per gallon is to cover oil as well

Well I get 32 MPG without the A/C running full blast.
It all depends on what you drive, drive the big minivan or Tonka Truck and of course you get lower milage.

actually most minivans get aabout 20-25 now, I had a full size chevy AWD 1500 getting 23 if I drove it nice.
And I have yet to make a move in the Coast Guard that did not make me some money!!!

but the average price of gas is not 3.30 a gallon. hell San diego has one of the highest gas prices in the country and in town it's 3.25.

Your bending the facts to make your argument. the average price of gas is 2.89 a gallong right now.

so

3000k/18 mpg = 166 x 2.89 = 469.74 (at 20 mpg 333.50)

I do not think that's to unfair. my wifes corrola gets 32 MPG.

I could make day old bread sound bad, if I told everyone it's a week old.

I think that the 20 MPG rating is prett fair. My suburban with a 5.3 liter I got 18 mpg average. A SUBURBAN!!!!!
That's the cost of doing buisness with a big vehicle, or a high performance car. If you wanted to worry about money. Why do you have an 18 MPG vehicle?

As Clint said...adapt, improvise, overcome.

Use some of your own cash and enjoy the drive with some sightseeing along the way. Pocket some of the per diem by downsizing your meals or stopping at places that offer a free breakfast. Grab some groceries and make lunch at a park along the route. Save some of your TLE money. Dip into your DLA. Stay at a military "Q" or lodge one or two nights.

There's any number of ways to overcome the increase in fuel prices.

Don't expect everything in life to be fair or reasonable. The whole mileage thing is a bit messed up and a bit misunderstood. The TDY rate for cars has increased 21% in the same time that the motorcycle rate has remained unchanged. At ~ 35 mpg, there are cars that get better mileage than my bike and some get worse. Even with that said - ZERO increase in TDY mileage for bikes. Now - back to PCS mileage: A member gets a 33% increase in their mileage rate if they have their spouse and twin babies in the car. NOBODY could justify an 33% increase in gas consumption by adding 135 lbs to their vehicle. Put a couple of those things together and you can see it is not based on your fuel costs.

The morale? If you want more mileage - get a rent a family for your trip! Big Grin

Of course the CG's not going to pay you to drive a gas hog. The CG will pay for the gas in a car that gets you to and from work. Nothing fancy. If you choose to drive a fancy car then that's your problem.

We went through the same thing transfering from MI to San Diego last summer. We pulled a travel trailer with our Chevy Suburban and got maybe 8 MPG. We paid 1000.00 in just gas BUT we saved by camping and by me cooking in the camper. We got a sh*t load of $$ for moving across country with a family of 6. We even had $$ left over!

So what we did was instead stead of taking the '5' days alloted......we took 2 weeks and had a blast! It was a trip of a lifetime and I THANK the CG for giving us the trip of a lifetime.

Stop your b*tchen and enjoy it while you can!

Since gas has been on the rise for several ytears now, with no reduction in site, I am not sympathetic for those that own the big V8's, SUV's with large engines or any other gas hogs,,,,

I do have a V8, but I got that (my 64 Corvette) that I had long before there was a rise in gas prices.. Since gas has been on the increase, I only want something that runs on regular, and a V6 works just fine.....

Of course the Harley is better than that Big Grin Wink

Wray... Cool

P.S. It may not be long before $4.00 per gallon.. Hope those that have the big Dodge Hemi's enjoy 'em... Razz

MALT stands for Mileage Allowance in Lieu of Transportation. I don't think the allowance is designed to defer your entire cost of fuel plus, wear and tear on the vehicle. If you don't want to pay a little out of pocket, you can always sell your vehicle and fly.

I paid $3.49 a gallon this a.m. at the local Shell station. At the local Chevron I believe they wanted $3.56 a gallon. We're getting closer and closer to $4.00 a gallon. The wife and I are thinking about selling both our vehicles and riding Mopeds back up to Washington state!
