I'm prior service Air Force and am thinking of joining the Coast Guard as an MST. What do they really do? I know the formal description isn't always what they do.
(I was a vehicle operator. "You will drive all of the vehicles in the Air Force fleet." I spent every day washing cars.)

I've heard they scrub ducks.....Smile

Most MST's that I've been around do lots of different things: Container Inspections, Facility Inspections and Security, Port Security, Pollution stuff, and alot of other stuff... It seems like a good job with lots of variety. If I ever go USCGR, that's what I'm gonna go for.

In addition to what was mentioned, various types of vessel inspections as well as Investigations. What does most of that translate to? You're federal regulator. You ensure that various aspects of the Comercial Matritime industry adhere to the regulations that apply to them.

If you want to discuss MST life and see what it is all about try going to msthub.com

That is where most of our kind hang out these days.

Well, I'll help solve the mystery. We work 9-11am. I have to call "nothing" work as it sounds better. Then we take lunch and go home or to some kind of morale event funded by all the funds the Sector has stolen from the stations!!! Dvlish

That about sums it up.

Oh, and by the way, its "ourselves." At least we can spell! Big Grin

msthub is a good site for info, but you can't post anything there if you're not a MST or former MST.

I really would love to be able to ask some questions about how sectors are working with the Auxiliary on there, but they shut down the open posting portion of their forum.

That would be because they consider themselves an elite bunch, lol.

See what I mean?

I'm wondering where it is that fishstix is stationed, because there's zip for morale here in Baltimore.

Truth? It's long periods of paperwork and massive amounts of phone conferencing that can occur at any time of day or night. Every once in a while a big-deal something or other occurs, and then it's crazy for a few days.

Well, the explanation for that is morale is only issued to E-7s and above. Big Grin

DH saw his first oily bird a few months ago. Sadly, the Coasties never got to scrub him. Seems the locals prefer to do their own wash-and-fluff.

MST's can be a sensitive bunch, somewhat adverse to criticism. Wink

Well of course we are. They don't make movies about us and we're rarely, if ever, in the news unless we really screw up! Big Grin

Actually...the open part of the MST Hub is closed because of spammers posting porn on there. There was a lot of good questions/discussions from non MSTs but with the visibility of the Hub, the last thing that the place would need is an Admiral stopping by before the admins or mods were able to delete the spam.

Possibly the moderators of the MST Hub could make up an email address for people to submit valid questions?... Smile
