I'm prior service Air Force and am thinking of joining the Coast Guard as an MST. What do they really do? I know the formal description isn't always what they do. (I was a vehicle operator. "You will drive all of the vehicles in the Air Force fleet." I spent every day washing cars.)
Most MST's that I've been around do lots of different things: Container Inspections, Facility Inspections and Security, Port Security, Pollution stuff, and alot of other stuff... It seems like a good job with lots of variety. If I ever go USCGR, that's what I'm gonna go for.
In addition to what was mentioned, various types of vessel inspections as well as Investigations. What does most of that translate to? You're federal regulator. You ensure that various aspects of the Comercial Matritime industry adhere to the regulations that apply to them.
