I have just recently put my name on the A school list for MST. I am curious as to how your duty station out of school is determined. Any information would be greatly appreciated.
During A school your class will be given a list of picks. You them compile and submit your choices like you would for an ADC. Who gets what is determined by class performance, TIS, award points, and your previous duty station. I can't tell you how this is all calculated, but I can give an example of how my friend got first pick in our class. He was an AMT3, aircrew qualified, with 6 years in, mostly spent at Air Station Kodiak. He also did pretty well in A school serving as class leader.
To ellaborate on what was said before me it was done on a point system when I went through. First and foremeost was your previous duty station. For priority 1 units the member recieved 500 points. P2 recieved 400 and so on until P5 which recieved 100 points. Individual awards were worth ten times the amount they were worth on a service wide. Example...a Letter of Commendation is worth 1 SWE point so it was worth 10 points in A school. TIS and class performance were worth points but by the time you factored in priority and awards it was pretty much decided. Realize that this was four years ago but hopefully that gives you some sort of an idea.
That sounds totally ridiculous. So you can be a dirtbag and poor performer in school and get top pick as long as you came from an overseas cutter. I would hope that the MST detailer would have a better way of issuing out a new MST's first assignment than that.
