Well I will tell you every SLS is a little different. There are standards but just like units they still vary.
I'll give you the over view of ours. My unit is one of 6 host schools that runs two one week schools at The Citadel (The Military College of SC, in Charleston). We host schools from a large number of states(16 I want to say)and cadets from Singapore through the International Cadet Exchange Program (ICEP). Our SLS is known as COLS (cadet officer leadership school) and we have about 250 cadets per week. We focus on drill, leadership, physical fitness and education. We have two types of cadets:basics (there for the first time) and Cadre (returning members who act in the staff possitions of a unit). Cadets arrive mid day on Monday (early morning for cadre) and graduate before noon on Saturday. All cadets stay in the Barraks at the Citadel, basic rooms are 2 per room and cadre 3-4 (cadre rooms are corners and so they are larger). It is attempted that no cadet stays with a cadet from their unit, though it does happen. Because we run a very large SLS it is also unlikely to have more than 2 or 3 (cadre and basics) to the same flight, we have 12. Basics are watched over by flight cadre who serve as mentors and advisors. The group staff is selected from cadre who apply. The day begins with reville at 0530 for all cadets. This if followed by a report (report happens every time cadets fall in on the "quad" the open center of the barracks)and standard AFJROTC Pt. Afterword cadets are give about an hour to shower and change into Blue Suit for breakfast and inspection. After breakfast is inspection. Staff Cadre (which run both room and uniform inspections) inspect cadets, and their rooms simultainously. Cadets then go to drill (a memorized sequence similar to that of drill meets) or for class. All basics attend class for around 2-3 hours a day. Room inspections are done in a military manor in accordance with an issued packet. During class cadre either practice for the Pass in Review Parade or attend classes. Through the corse of the day this is repeated with lunch and some kind of "special trip." One day is a tour of the campus, a trip to Fort Moultry, and time at the cadet store. Sometime during the course of the day cadets will return to their rooms to change into issued shorts and t-shirt. In the evening basics compete in a volleyball tournament after dinner. After is a "how goes it" meeting about the progress for the week followed by time for cadets to prepare for the next day. Taps is at 1000. On Friday the PT test counts, there is a graded drill evaluation, and a writen test on the classes. After is free time around the campus ending with a movie. The pass in review parade is practiced usually at least once thursday and twice friday. It is performed for parents and guests Saturday at 0800 with awards for drill, room and personal inspections, outstanding flight, pt, and outstand flight and staff cadre. I'm sorry it was so long but I hope it helps. If you have any more questions feel free to ask. Cadet Major Marsh Deputy/CC SC-071 |

Yes this does help a lot in my decision to go. I would go to Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton Ohio if your curious. It sure sounds like a lot of fun to me. Once again thanks a lot.

Oh, Wright-Pat is a beautiful base if you've never been there. It is really a very nice place. I've been on a few bases and I was very impressed by the all around apperance of it.

I am interested in attending SLS and live in Corona, California; my instructor for JROTC has provided no information for SLS accept to chosen cadets; last year 12 were chosen out of 100 cadets; can I apply to go to SLS on my own? Or do I have to be selected by commanding officer? I cannot be promoted to any upper ranks at my high school until I have attended SLS but my chances of being chosen when only 12 out of 100 could be chosen last year and most JROTC funds at my school are frozen. I am willing to pay for SLS myself, if there is a charge but really don't know what to do to reserve myself a spot at SLS, accept to continue working very hard and hope to be selected.

No, you will have to apply through your unit. I know it's hard to be selected and I am sympathetic but because sls are run by S/ASI you will require unit consent. My only advice is to tell your instructor that you would like to go and work as hard as you can to stand out as someone who deserves to go.

I'm going there next Wednesday for a feild trip to the AF museum. We have to do a report on an aircraft. I went there once or twice when I was younger but don't remember much.
In my unit all we have to do is tell them we want to go, they write are name down and were good to go. This could be because we are a rather small unit of about 60-65 cadets. Also I know every unit does this different but if you are a 1st year cadet and you go to sls what rank would you be whaen you come back? At my unit I would come back as a Cadet Master Sergeant. Thanks. C/Amn Gardner |
