On the eve of our units second year, I was promoted from C/2ndLt (Public Affairs) to C/Capt (KHAS Commander). In the first year of our unit, I didn't do much with our budding KHAS, since the first commander didn't do much for us. However, I want to change that.

What I really would like to know is how to get things started. The school year hasn't started yet and I have about a month left until it does, so I wanted to get some things done before hand. I know that I have to memorize several things and do some other voluntary activities, but what I need to know is how to conduct things further.

I'm really new to KHAS, but I am doing my best to read up on what they do. I am still, however, pretty clueless on many things. For instance, what exactly does the KHAS do? What can I do to make sure that happens?

My SASI said that because the previous commander didn't get the ball rolling, I have to step up to the plate and do it myself. He pretty much also told me that I will be filling most of the office jobs for the society for about a semester. I would like to run a few things by you and see if that is a good way to get things going.

1) The existing members from last year will be required to memorize the necessary passages and do their volunteer work to become an active member.

2) After the initial members join, we decide on the name of the chapter.

3) From what I have read so far, it seems we have to write our own draft of the Constitution and make bylaws and such.

4) Complete the community service project that my SASI has requested us do.

Does that seem like a good way to start things? I really want to show my SASI that I am a good leader since my job as the Public Affairs officer didn't go so smoothly.

Please, any help will be great. Thanks.

In regards to what KHAS should do, I believe they should be a kind of "Honor Society" within the AFJROTC unit similar to NJHS/NHS in middle/high schools. One of those such things is going annually to local elemantary or middle schools and mentoring younger students and helping them with their homework. You're going in the right track but you shouldn't hesitate to get other people in leadership roles within your KHAS. In my unit all of the members of the KHAS must have an A or B in each class, have an A in JROTC, and not get in any trouble. Hope that helps.

That does help millions, thanks. I'll be sure to discuss this with my SASI.
