Getting into spinning fiber and wondered if anyone else had a wheel!

I don't have a wheel but I've seen it done at one of those farm shows. It looks really interesting. Are you planning on making a blanket with your yarn. (is that what it is called?)

The yarn I spin will be used to knit whatever for now. In the future I may end up getting a loom as well to make blankets and such that way too.

When I was little I read the book "The Goat in the Rug" by Charles L. Blood.
It's about a Navajo woman that shears her pet goat and then spins his fur into yarn to make a rug. It goes through all the steps from shearing to rug. Ever since then, I've always been fasinated with that craft. I've never done spinning but have woven blankets before (at that farm) and small items on the toy looms. Where do you get the fiber? |

It's easy to find the fiber online - just do a search!
I remember going to the Governer's square in NM and seeing all the Indian rugs and blankets. I was so interested in the pattarns and colors. Our kids had a book when they were little that was a take on Ten Little Indians. They were bunnies with the tribal rugs and such - it was a really neat book! My grandmother was a seamstress and I guess my love of fibers and sewing started there. I can remember being 2-3 years old and sitting with my grandmother. She would be busy with whatever work and she would give me a scrap of material, a box of buttons and a threaded needle - I would sit there and sew buttons onto the material as long as the thread lasted! LOL I just love the tactile sensations when sewing, knitting, doing needlepoint, etc. It's almost like meditation for me - I get into a rythmn and it just clams me and lets me relax. My husband already knows a loom will come in the next few years! LOL He knows me all too well. Sgt Mom Everything becomes a little clearer, I realize what life is all about. I'd rather be knitting. |
Target has started carrying roving, as well as finished yarn and other needlecraft stuff.
Sgtmom, just pull yourself back if you go too far- sheep are nice, but require loads of upkeep. |
