I have been trying to find any information on Marines in the ETO during WW2. Does anyone know of any books or articles on the subject? I know there probably weren't many at all, but there had to be some.

I found this article that should be of interest to you:

http://www.ibiblio.org/hyperwar/USMC/USMC-C-Iceland.html

I don't know of any books that specifically deal with Marine units which served in other areas of the ETO. I did come across this book, however:

http://www.amazon.com/Marine-Corps-World-Order-Battle/dp/0313319065

Whether or not it contains anything on the 1st Marine Brigade in Iceland, or any other Marine units in Europe, I couldn't say.

I appreciate the info. My reading usually goes in phases. I've been on a WW2 submarine phase lately and while trying to decide what phase to go into next, I realized I knew nothing about Marines in the ETO....I'll bet a few Marines stationed on Navy ships went ashore during DDay or maybe worked for the OSS.

They were absolutely no US Marines on shore on D-Day,none. The only Marines there were the detachments on USN capital ships and they never left them.

USNVet940 is correct with the USMC in Iceland. Also there was a detachment to guard the US Navy base at Londonderry,Northern Ireland, the elements on the capital ships and they were Marines with the OSS.

Thank you for that post and link. From the several general histories I have on the war (most of my books are on specific battles, aircraft, ships, etc.), the only thing concerning the Marines in the ETO that has ever received any mention was the Marines in Iceland.

At least one did. Colonel Robert O. Bare, who was attached to the British Assault Force J went ashore with the 3d Canadian Division. He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal. He later served as Chief of Staff of the 1st Marine Division at Okinawa.

Marines in the ETO served as seagoing bell-hops on Cruisers, Battleships and aircraft carriers.

Although a few served with O'Donovans OSS.
