Engraved on granite blocks near the water pool at the east end of the monument are the casualty statistics for the soldiers who fought in the war.

* Dead — United States: 54,246,[3] United Nations: 628,833
* Wounded — United States: 103,284, United Nations: 1,644,453.
* Captured — United States: 7,140, United Nations: 92,970.
* Missing — United States: 8,177,[4] United Nations: 470,267.

Does the UN casualty number here correct? I think it is way too much high. Does it include ROK civilian casualty or it is only military casualty? What is the original resource of these numbers?How do we come up with these numbers? Any idea?

Being it's a national monument would prompt one to believe a significant amount of resarch had been done to justify the numbers.

Do some research and post a report.

What exactly prompts you to question this?

My question is:

1) Does the UN total casualty number on DC War Memorial including ROK civilians or it is only UN military force's loss?
2) If the first answer is "yes", how many of them are military and how many are civilians?

I am just interested in Korean War and want to do more research on this topic. Thanks.

From the stats I've seen on several different sites, the numbers on the monument apparently include civilian, military, and accidental casualties. For example: the figure of 54,246 US dead includes over 17,000 who died worldwide over the three years of the war in accidents/training mishaps.

"www.koreanwar-educator.org/topics/casualties/index.htm"

According to the chart at the site below, the figures for UN fatalities (which, I assume, are strictly military) add up to less than half of the 628,833 listed in the first post.
