I'm currently an Air Force Comm officer and was considering the Blue to Green program and become (hopefully) a 25A. As an AF Comm Officer, you mostly "manage" the people. Very few of us get the hands on training. 99% of the tech stuff are done by the enlisted folks. We usually get a working knowledge so we can talk intelligently with our troops and the "customers". Majority of the time, we sit in offices and make our round to the troops, even when deployed (depending on your position, such as deployable comm.) Going to the branchorientation site, it seems our Army counterparts lead/manage troops and get down and dirty as well, which is a lot more interesting. Can anyone chime in on this? Also, is/was the Basic Signal Officer school difficult, both physically and mentally? Finally, at BSOS, is like boot camp where a Drill Sgt chew you out for everything you do? Thanks in advance!

I've never seen an officer operate, maintain, or troubleshoot any signal equipment. As far as SOBC is concerned, no, there are not Drill Sergeants there. (Fort Gordon will not have any drill sergeants for the AIT students after 1 Jan 08 anyway).

Really? What's the reasoning behind this?

TRADOC is taking away drill sergeants from the AIT environment. They are being replaced by Platoon Sergeants. Personally, I really do not know why this is happening. It may have something to do with Drill Sergeants being forced to be babysitters more than anything. At least that's what it seems to be like here at Fort Gordon after talking to a few of the Drill Sergeants.

The PSG will have to have a GT of 105 or higher, pass a background check similar to recruiters, and have no prior convictions. The PSG will do all the tasks that the Drill Sergeant used to do, but will not get the Special Duty Pay. The Soldier's AIT instructors will be squad leaders, and the prior service students will be team leaders.

Now that sounds like a disaster waiting to happen.

And there's no guarantee that there'll be prior service students in each class.

Just call it aculturization. Its time to stop coddling these kids and teach them to work under the Army system again. I disagreed when they went to Drills in AIT in the late 80's in the Signal schools.

They need to stop being held by the hand, learn whats expected of them, and the ramifications of not doing what they're suppose to be doing.

I'm a 25A, I just graduated SOBC last week and I can tell you that there is not much real hands on with the equipment. Some of the things you need to know more than others, but it is mostly assignment dependent. SOBC isn't hard, it is not much different than going to school in the Air Force. (I was a TSgt before going Blue to Green)

Physically it isn't hard, but that all depends on your level of fitness. The Army and the Air Force have different views on what is hard physically. Mentally it wasn't hard at all, I was a Loadmaster and a Space Operator while in the Air Force and those schools were much harder.

SOBC is not hard at all. most of the test are open book/note. alot of powerpoint. Augusta,Ga is a decent location. a few hours from the ocean, atlanta. The only drill Sgts. are for AIT. when I was down there we did an APFT about every month but nothing overly difficult.

Sometimes, I wonder if the leadership at the OCOS has undergone a lobotomy. First, BNCOC and ANCOC will be reduced to eight weeks. Then, FOB training. Now, there will be no drill sergeants at AIT.

And no more BNCOC and ANCOC, they are going to be called ALC (Advanced Leaders Course) and SLC (Senior Leaders Course) if memory serves correctly.

Six more months here....

This just keeps getting me confused the more I read all the forums, I hear that FT Gordon's AIT is an admin hellhole, no communication between cadre, etc.. now I hear that they are taking away DS 4 months BEFORE I reclass to 25B? BNCOC and ANCOC no longer being named that? Just seems like all the experience I'm going for is being taken away from me right BEFORE I can get to it, eesh. Anyway, my current XO is in signal, but assigned to an FA unit, this is apparently how it all works in the army. If you are any sort of officer, you go where the army needs you, regardless of your training... am I wrong?
