I am looking to reenlist for the second time in the next couple of weeks or so. I plan on requesting Fort Gordon as my station of choice. I have a question about the active units that are located there. I know that 93rd Signal Brigade recently reflagged to 35th Signal Brigade which moved from Fort Bragg and dropped it's Airborne status and tab. I also know that 5th SIG BN will reflag under the 35th SIG BDE but will it move to Fort Gordon or stay at Fort Hood? And is the 56th SIG BN still at Fort Gordon even though it reorganized under 21st SIG BDE? Besides 35th SIG BDE what other active signal units are there? I'm not talking TRADOC units just active. I also need to know which of those units are currently deployed or will be deploying in the near future. I'm trying to get assigned to one of those units so that I can come back over here to Iraq as soon as possible, I really need the money. I am going to talk with my branch manager and try to get pinpoint orders for a unit that will be headed to Iraq soon. I just need to know what unit to request. I understand the OPSEC issue with discussing this information. You can just email me the details at justin.t.scott at us.army.mil (you know the deal, take out the "at" and replace with @).

I want to make sure that I get everything in my contract before I raise my right hand. Thanks.

Just an update for all those that have been rushing to reply to this thread. Big Grin

I just checked my ERB and saw that I am projected to report to B CO 447th Signal Battalion. I'm not sure what to make of this quite yet. I thought all the instructors were assigned to 551st Signal Battalion? At least that's the way it was when I was there last, which was just after they moved all the companies around (Jan/Feb 2006). Does this mean I'm not slotted to be an instructor or did they move the instructors around again? Or are all the instructors now assigned to all the AIT companies since they are all the soldiers' squad leaders? I'm just not sure what I would be doing while assigned to a company with AIT students in it. I know about the whole no more drills at Fort Gordon thing. Just a little confused.

25S instructors are assigned to 551. I don't know why you would be going to B CO 447. Everyone that comes through here has to go to Darling hall to be slotted anyway (unless things have been changed recently) regardless of what is on your orders, so you very well could end up in the 35th. When are you due to report?

The companies have been reorganized again.. all instructors are scattered through the various companies as 'squad leaders' with the former drill sergeants as platoon sergeants. All in addition to your instructor duties, of course.

I don't understand why you would go to 447 though.. 25S students are assigned to 551 (along with 25P, F, Q, and N), and B remaining in 447 and U and C at 369), so that probably is subject to change, like everything else in the Army.

Yeah, I'm not sure what's going on at Gordon now with all the shuffling around of drills and instructors. I guess I'll have to wait and see. I was hoping to get a heads up on things. Perhaps I'll wait closer to my reporting date for that. I checked ASK and it said my reporting date is 19 September 2009!?!? That can't be right, I'm sure it's suppose to be 2008. I contacted Ms. Johnson at branch to bring attention to it. She hasn't answered a single one of my emails yet.

That seems a bit ridiculous if you ask me. To juggle both instructor duties and squad leader. I don't know if this is true or not but our DataPath field service rep out here has a buddy that's an instructor as Gordon and says that with the instructors becoming squad leaders the days are really long. Essentially you have to do everything the drills use to do plus train them in their MOS. You have to babysit them during the time they aren't at school as well (ensure they do personal hygeiene, eat chow, etc). That's all part of being a leader I suppose but there is such a thing as too much. If that's the case then I would much rather be in 35th. I get to have more hands on time with the equipment, train my team, hopefully deploy, and be home at a decent hour when we're in garrison. I might just take pfont's advice and request to get transferred to 35th. I imagine that an OPTEMPO unit would have priority for incoming soldier assignments anyway.

I just checked my orders that sent me to Fort Gordon a few years ago to reclass and the unit they have on those orders is B CO 447 as well. I was actually assigned to HQ & A CO when I got there since I was a prior service non-IET reclass student. I don't know, maybe that's the unit they put on all incoming personnel orders???

You might want to contact SFC A (not going to put his full name up for PERSEC reasons, but I think you know who I'm talking about). I talked to a few guys that know him, and he seems to be a squared away guy.
Yes, instructors are now squad leaders. I am not one because I instruct a course at Vincent Hall that only accepts prior service students, and I leave next month. But from what I understand, their workload has increased dramatically.

I courtesy copied him the email I sent to Ms. Johnson about my reporting date. We'll see if either respond. I don't know what to think of all this quite yet. While being in TRADOC has its advantages (i.e. no deployments, stable schedule, predictability) it also has its downfalls with this instructor/squad leader transformation. And to be honest I don't really mind deploying, it brings about good money and good job experience. I wouldn't mind coming back over here with 35th if need be. I'm just thinking about those times when a new soldier out of AIT would arrive to the unit and me being the team leader would have to square him away and hope like hell he doesn't go out and get into trouble or blow his whole paycheck and can't pay his bills. I can't imagine having to do that with 15+ soldiers all at once. That in itself is a handful.
