I'm currently a government contractor doing IT stuff. I'm looking to go back into the Army but I'm hearing a lot of negative things about my old MOS which is now 25Q. Are they doing any part of their job on deployments?
I'm also looking at 25B and 25N. A friend of mine is recommending 25N. According to the recruiter, If I were to choose my old MOS, then I would have my pick of duty station, however, if I were to choose a new MOS, I would fall under "the needs of the Army". Is 25Q still a good MOS? Should I pick 25N or 25B instead? Ugh, my head is gonna explode from reading all this info. And what the hell is this FOB crap at Gordon? I would hate to think that after being out for 7 years, I would have to go straight to the field.. heheh.. Is this some kind of field in-processing station? When would Prior Service get their uniforms? Thanks for any and all help. |

Hey,
25Q isn't a bad MOS. Depending on what kind of unit you go to, will dictate what equipment you will work with. I think that you process you go through is WTC for 3 weeks. It's a basic training re-fresher, then AIT. The old legacy equipment you used back in the day seems to be on its way out. But they still teach it in AIT. I'm not sure what the FOB portion of AIT is, but I hear it's pretty lame. 25B, N, and S seems to be the way to go right now. They train on equipment that is closer to what they will use in real unit. While Qs seem to get cross trained to do a little of everything. This is all based on MY experience, best of luck. |

My son is newly enlisted, and his MOS is 25Q, it sounds right up his alley, as he loves network and server stuff. Can I ask why you would like to re-enlist? I have heard that after the Army, and as a civilian, you can get a really good job with the 25Q experience. I was also wondering does the 25Q have to go in to combat zones? are they considered Infantry as well? I am a bit confused on that area. Just a nosy mom, good luck on whatever you decide. My son got a bonus signing up for the 25Q, thought you might like to know that.

Hey ProudMom. I personally don't know too much about the Q series. I was a 25U and I did a little bit of everything including a lot of computer networking. I have been out since 2006 and from what I have been hearing they are doing a lot of changing and reconfiguring with the Signal MOS's. As far as being in a combat zone, most definitely. As Signal is the backbone of the Army. As far as infantry, everyone who puts on the uniform are all infantry first and always have to train to fight. My first unit I was in 2nd Infantry Division supporting Armor (Abrams Tanks) and all of the communications from the motor pool to computers. There are a lot of good jobs in any Signal MOS. It just depends on how far you want to take it and in life. I got a pretty decent job when I got out doing IT work and I don't even have any computer certifications. Tell your son to make the most of his military career, with whatever path he chooses. If he likes IT stuff, encourage him to get his schooling in and some certifications. If he decides to stay in or get out he will have one heck of a resume. Good luck, it’s always great to know there is good family support in the military.
Respectfully! |

Thank you a million Commo2id. Your post was informative. I am glad he picked Signals, he is really good at computer repair and he helped do some wiring and network stuff with a company before he enlisted. That makes sense to learn how to be a soldier first, then do your advanced job. I have a cousin with the 3rd ID, he was inside the Abrams tank, went to the sandbox 3 times. He gave advice too. Thanks for the write back and support, I appreciate it.
