I’m really considering joining the Army National Guard. I took my asvab today and I am eligible for 25S - Satellite Communication Systems Operator Maintainer. Unfortunately the unit I will be joining doesn’t have any open 25F’s and the only open 25B is tentatively taken.
Does anyone here have any advice or experience pertaining to 25S? What will I really be doing, what kind of equipment will I be working with? I primarily work with Cisco routers and switches on a large scale for an ISP in my civilian job. Will 25S have the same exposure to this type of hardware?
If I take this 25S slot, I will be enlisting as a traditional guardsmen, drilling on weekends. My ultimate goal is to transition to Warrant Officer 250N in a few years, after I completed my Bachelors.
I'm currently in Afghanistan as a 25S, everything previously mentioned is true. You will be working with AN/TSC 167 Ku Trailers or AN/TSC 169 Hub Trucks. We operate both TDMA and FDMA links. You will have ample opportunity to work with routers and switches in the Baseband side of the house while deployed, but usually thats not required. If you want some more info, shoot me an email @ nathan.a.hudson@hotmail.com
That's if he gets in a NG outfit that owns a JNN/CPN.
As far as I know they are still teaching DSCS at the schoolhouse, but you can get a good overview of transmissions from there.
You say your desired unit has no open 25F slots....do they have any 25N openings? If they don't have any 25Ns there, you will probably be working with legacy equipment.
