How is Signal in the Reserves? What are the pro's and con's? Also when I contract in the next few months for ROTC I'm either going into the Reserves or National Guard and if I SMP with a Signal unit could anyone tell me what to expect? Thanks
Change, nothing but change. The paradygm is shifting so that lots of monolithic BN sized signal units are being converted to company-sized elements attached to Units of Action.
I SMP with a Sig Co (Guard). Not a whole lot to do when all your equipment is "over there". Other Sig units might be different.
If the unit you SMP with is like mine, expect: -APFT, 2x a year. -Classes. -Weapons Maint., that havent been used since the last drill when you cleaned them. -PMCS -not a whole lot of fun, but still interesting to see how it all works since you will be shadowing an LT or CPT.
I have a friend drilling with a signal unit. During the first few drills, he would ask for something to do and they would tell him "Just..stand right here. Don't move. I'll be right back" and then walk off and forget about him.
My first drill was spent helping prepare the holiday meal. I actually spent an hour with the order "Watch this soup and make sure it does not boil over." I hear that unit doesn't have much for its SMP cadets to do anyway (It's a FA unit and they're fully staffed, so the LTs don't need any help and I don't know a thing about being a cannon crewmember).
What I'm getting at is that SMP is what you make of it. If nobody tells you what to do, follow around some E-4s and take part in their training until somebody tells you that you can't.
