pfont77,

Are you still a 25S instructor at Fort Gordon? Can you please tell me more about it? My husband is a 25S SSG, pursuing an instructor assignment the next few months. I would appreciate any advice/info.

beus,

I am an instructor here, but only for another week. I can tell you this, being an instructor here has certainly dramatically increased the workload of alot of the SSGs. They are now squad leaders and must directly deal with the trainees. If you have any specific questions, I would be happy to answer them.

However, if I were a SSG coming to Fort Gordon, I would definitely see about going to the 35th Signal Brigade, they are the tactical non-Tradoc signal unit here on post.

pfont77,

Thanks for your prompt reply! I do have tons of questions and appreciate your help & patience.

So here we go: How long have you been a 25S instructor there? Are there separate instructors for 1C/tactical/strategic? Is it true that the army/TRADOC is trying to limit one's instructor time at Gordon to 2-3 years and then rotate them out? Would it be possible to stay for longer...so it's worth buying a house? How long is the "instructor course/school"? And where is it? If my husband was to be stationed there, and he does NOT have the "Hotel" identifier yet...how long would he have to wait to go to instructor school? Is there a long waiting line for that? Would he be able to start teaching right after finishing the course? And his question to you: how does your daily "battle rhythm" look like?

That's it for now...thanks again!

2.5 years

Are there separate instructors for 1C/tactical/strategic? Yes. Every group has its own instructors, for example, DCSS, Common Core, 1C, TACSAT, etc.

Is it true that the army/TRADOC is trying to limit one's instructor time at Gordon to 2-3 years and then rotate them out? I hear this is true. I hadn't come down on assignment, I put in for OCS. However there are other instructors that have been here for 3-4 years that are coming down on orders.

Would it be possible to stay for longer...so it's worth buying a house?
I would buy a house here in Columbia County. With the housing market the way it is, you will get one for a very good price. Go to realtor.com and look up listings for the cities of Grovetown, Evans, Martinez. Do NOT buy a house in Richmond County. Some places in Richmond County are nice places to live, however Columbia County is experiencing much better growth. You can rent it out when you leave. There are a couple brand new housing communities on post which are very nice. I live in the older housing in Gordon Terrace (moving out later this week) and its not worth it to tell you the truth.

How long is the "instructor course/school"? ITC is 2 weeks, and its right here on post.

And where is it?
It's by the PX

If my husband was to be stationed there, and he does NOT have the "Hotel" identifier yet...how long would he have to wait to go to instructor school? A couple weeks after inprocessing.

Is there a long waiting line for that?

Not really, a month or two at the most.

Would he be able to start teaching right after finishing the course? He has to get CPR certified, and must attend a two day seminar on how to treat the trainees. There may be another small requirement or two, but nothing comes to mind. Before he actually gets on the podium and instructs, the NCOIC has to make sure that he knows the material that he is teaching. I instruct Milstar, so I am separate from the other instructors.

And his question to you: how does your daily "battle rhythm" look like?

My daily routine is different from the other instructors here. However I will ask one of them and post the answer for you later on.

That's it for now...thanks again!

Nope. We have had quite a few go through BNCOC while they are here, as well as WLC. Have you gone to BNCOC yet BeaufordBuddy?

No I haven't yet. After further thought I remember my basic electronics instructor going to BNCOC while I was reclassing. Since I'm on assignment to Gordon it'll be easy for me to knock out BNCOC while I'm there. I'm still trying to have my report date looked at. It's currently listed as September 2009. I really hope that's a typo. I didn't even realize they could project assignments that far into the future. Can you remember back when you PCSed to Gordon to become an instructor, what exactly did your orders say? Did it say 447 SIG BN?

Mine said A447 Signal Battalion. BNCOC is really easy here to get out of the way. I went while I was here (I had to go back because the first time I went I was injured). By the time I graduated I had almost five years as a SSG. Did you send an email to branch about the assignment?

I am on assignment for B CO 447 which coincidentally is what was listed on my orders when I was sent to Gordon to reclass. I know where I am placed will more than likely change once I arrive there.

I actually contacted the Signal Branch Chief, LTC Osbourne, since my assignment manager wasn't replying back to my emails. He responded within one day and said that he doesn't normally deal with assignments in retention cases (since I reenlisted for Gordon) but that he'd look into the matter for me. I even talked with my career counselor who basically said that there's nothing he can do, that's the date I was given and I'm stuck with it. He doesn't even want to look into the issue to find out if it's just an error or not. It seems like once they reel you in they want nothing left to do with you. I just have a gut feeling that it's a typo because I'm currently in a life cycle unit. The time for PCS and ETS moves is during the reset phase after a deployment or operation which would be August-October 2008, not next year. This unit will be deployed again by when they say my report date is, September 2009.

It's all frustrating I tell you. Frown

Well I had branch look into the report date problem. They have since changed my assignment and report date. I am now reporting to 35th Signal Brigade NLT 30 September 2008.
