Hubby is in Iraq and we've been tossing around the idea of him reenlisting, he just doesn't know a whole lot about it yet so in the mean time I'll just ask you all if you don't mind.
He's been in for 20 months now so next month he will be eligable for reenlistment, correct?
His contract ends in '09, so if he reenlisted in the next couple months for 4 years, it would actually only be 2 extra years meaning his contract would then end in 2011 right?
His MOS is 25S (and he's also a paratrooper)right now he is E-4, anyone know about how much his reenlistment bonus would be if he added 2 more years?
Last one I promise... one of the reasons he's thinking of reenlisting is because neither of us have a college education and we have 2 children, were thinking it's going to be a struggle to provide for our family if we don't get college done before he gets out of the Army, does he have to wait until he is out of the Army to use his GI Bill for college?
I know he can get those answers, the thing is I don't get to talk to him very often he is really busy, so by the time he gets the answers to those and gets back to me about it... well it could be a long time, so I thought I'd ask if anyone already knew (or had an idea) any of the answers to my questions.
No he doesnt have to wait to use his GI Bill benefits, but he also has other options available at the education center, ensure that he uses them. It will be tough with the high OPTEMPO and it'll suck with the amount of precious time that it will consume while he's supposedly "down" but in the long run its your best chance to succeed in the long run. He needs to be taking care of his personal future during his free time instead of kicking back washing down the suds. Don't get sucked into the lifestyle of living for the moment, because a lifetimes longer than you think when you're young.
You are correct that without a college degree both of y'all face a difficult stuggle in the civilian workforce. Local community college wouldnt be a bad thing for you either while he's gone... day care on post is better than what you'd pay for on the economy.
The retention NCO will start getting interested in your DH 180 days out from ETS.
If he is a 25S then and isn't taking classes while he is down range you need to tell him to quit B$#^ S%*& around. The only reason he isn't taking at least 2 classes right now is that he is too busy with the Xbox.
Wow, well he got back to me way sooner than I expected. I guess for 4 extra years it would be about a 20k bonus lump sum no taxes, and we'd get to stay at Bragg, so we shouldn't have any trouble finishing our college educations in that amount of time. Alot to think about...
