I got a 118 on the DLAB, and one of my friends made a huge deal about that. Is it a really good score or not?

Also- I will be going to the Defense Language Institute -in Monterey, CA- for tech school, but there isn't an AF base there. Can I still live on base with my family, even though it's an army base?

I have no clue when my ship date is, because I haven't taken the physical yet. I will be 6 months postpartum on May 28, and I can't do anything else until that day. I just know I got an 86 on the ASVAB, 118 on the DLAB. If you haven't taken the DLAB yet, google "study guide for the DLAB". There really isn't one, but alot of people offer lots of really good advice. I just found out the categories for scoring and languages. They go as follows:
95-cat 1
100-cat 2
105-cat 3
110-cat 4
Arabic is part of Cat 4. I want to learn Japanese, mostly, but will settle for an Asian language. Cat4 has :Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Arabic.

Rossdking -

To answer your question about meps and ship dates, I went to meps on March 27th and I am still waiting to find out my ship date. Cryptolinguist is my only job choice and when you have only once choice it can take a while to find out when you leave. Most jobs open up at the beginning of the month so I have my fingers crossed that I will hear something first week of June.

I got a 125 when I had my DLAB, but yeah its a decent score. Honestly I don't think they are very valid when it comes down to it though.
You will live in the dorms on base without your family until you reach Phase 3, then if you
have behaved you will be allowed to move into the off-post housing near the post, which is multi-service. It takes 4 weeks from the date you arrive at DLI to accomplish this.

So I wont have to look for an apartment for my family? It's sounds like you may have described base housing, just off base. Is that right? Is there ususlly a wait, or can my family move right in after phase 3? Tanks for the help. I usually get things done for my family early, I'm just trying to be prepared. Oh yeah- and do they allow dogs?

DLI is really small, so you won't get housing on base. The housing is off post, about 15 minutes away. It's called Fort Ord. Your family can move there once you're in Monterey, only you have to wait to move in with them (like a month or so, no biggie). I think you can have up to two pets.

Just so you know -- Fort Ord is old. You will never have a cell phone signal and your internet connection will be terribly slow and make you angry. The housing allowance here is something like $1562. Honestly, I would try to find an apartment/house closer to base.

I couldn't get to Fort Ord to check it out so my husband took care of it all when we arrived.. and I regretted it every day thereafter.

Especially once you pass through the new housing areas (which you will not be moving into because there's a year waiting list.. and you have to have a YEAR left in Monterey to be allowed to move in)... you'll be depressed.

Anyway.. long story long.. look for an apartment. =) There are much nicer places for the housing allowance..

REPLY: Do you live in the "old" housing, or did you end up moving into a house or apt? Also, do you know of ANY cell services that work OK out there? I have Sprint right now, but my contract is up in 5 months, and would LOVE to change. I appreciate all the feedback. You have given me more useful info than anybody.

Hey never freakin mind. Turns out I'm 1 and a half mo.s pregnant, and my dreams of enlisting are shot. I'll be 28 in September, and this is my third baby. THERE IS NO HOPE FOR ME. I was looking forward to the DLI in Monterey, CA. OH well. The best part is, I JUST HAD ONE!! He's 6 mo.s old today. Well, I don't know if I'll delete my profile just yet, I'm gonna try to convince my hubby to enlist.

Congrats! Good luck to you.

I think one post explaining your situation would have been sufficient! This is the sixth time I think I've read it! Confused

Sorry- I am kinda new to this whole discussion thing. Thanks- It's gonna be really hard. I've had a while to think about it now, and If I still want to be some kind of linguist when I'm done I'll have to go with the Army, yuck. Frown

Sorry I didn't get to respond til way late -- I know you said you can't enlist now, but I'll answer it for other people. I lived in the "old" Ft Ord housing. The new housing you can get on a wait list -- but when a house opens you have to have at least 1 year left in the area.. and being that it takes like a year to get housing there, it's not going to happen.

No cell phone service is better than the other out there. The only one I've heard good things about is Verizon, so maybe with them.. but not enough to really do anything great for you. I recommend a land line if you care to talk to people on the phone without getting pissed off.

Korean and Chinese are absolute possibilities. Those departments are huge and probably always will be.

There is hope for you. =) Good luck with the new baby. If you really want to be a linguist -- it'd be hard, but find material to learn something on your own. Pick something that has long term usability.. Chinese, Korean, Russian, Arabic, things like that.. It's hard, but possible. The government posts lots of jobs online for linguists of many languages. They want a 3/3 score and that you can obtain a clearance. For ex: Linguist Job Post

I know of a guy who learned 5 languages on his own and scored a 3/3 in all of them. He's only formally completed one language course. If you want it bad enough, you'll do it.

the liason at meps told me they only use them as a guideline anyway, and you can get any language basically.

yeah figures, I was just curious because if that was the case then at least the scores would narrow the possible language down somewhat haha.
