I come from an AF family and have wanted to join for a while. I have one year of eligibility left to enlist. I am a civilian cop and have a family. I am over weight but have already lost about 30 pounds. I do have plenty to go, but I think it is obtainable to make weight at 200 or 205 in the next 6 to 8 months. My question is more about DEP. Can you sign for DEP if you haven't made weight yet? I work a crazy rotating 12 hour shift and switch from days to nights every two weeks, however I think I would do better and make weight quicker with the support that I could get from DEP. I have always had the team mentality and have proven time and time again that I can run faster and greater distances if I run with someone. It is harder on my own, but I still do it. If anyone has any advice or input I would greatly appreciate it. Also, with having an active sworn status as a civilian cop, I have heard I can go in as a E-3. ANyone heard anything about that?

The Air Force isn't going to let you swear in to DEP until you can make the weight standards.

you can only go in as a e-3 only if you sign up for six years or have college credits and you will have to meet the weight standerds frist

Definitely gonna have to make weight standards first. Also, you said you have 1 year eligibility left meaning you are 27. Make sure you get into DEPr status ASAP. You have to be in basic training before you turn 28 and leave dates are getting farther and farther out.

I had to lose 56 lbs before I could even think about going to MEPS. I just kept reporting to my recruiter everytime some weight came off. That in itself kept me motivated. Finally I got to the point where they scheduled me (took 7 months). I am 27 and turn 28 15-Feb-2010. Got my leave date 3 weeks ago: 02-FEB-2010 with 13 days to spare. If my bday came first I would have been ineligible even though I was already in the program. Good Luck to you!

Yep, I too contacted my recruiter before I made weight. I told him right away that I was x#s & that I knew I needed to be x#s to go to MEPS & that I had already lost x#s. There is a lot of preliminary paperwork that needs to be done so there is no reason to wait until you are under your MAW. I was also 27. Keep dropping the weight & call the recruiter once you're within 20-25#s or your b-day passes (which ever is first) because you will definitely get a credit check due to your age and if there are any other issues, it could take awhile.
