Have you been offered this job or did you just read about it and are wanting to do it? I can tell you there are very few of these in the Air Force and the likelihood of you getting it is slim to none. My guess is that it is not the most interesting job in the world, no. It sounds like a paper-pushing job to me that involves a lot of briefings etc. I, however, have no first-hand knowledge of it.

I've talked with a few folks that were chaplain assistants, even wanted to do it myself many moons ago. Yeah there is to some extent paperpushing. You help set up the services on Sundays, etc and do the bidding of the Chaplain. Also while deployed since Chaplains dont carry weapons, the CA is the gunman.

Chaplain Assistants are no longer pipeline(straight out of BMT). It is now just a re-trainee only AFSC for SrA and above. Please send me a private message if you want to know what my daily job entails to. =)

Wow I'm surprised to find a real life Chaplain's Assistant. Wink That does explain how the only ones I have ever seen are SrA or higher, though!

Can an atheist qualify for this job, or do you have to be a believer? On a side note, most CA's I have seen are usually very hot females. Don't know how it happens, but it sure seems that way.

True story. The 3 or 4 that I have ever met were attractive females. What gives?

There are a couple of Atheist and actually 2 Wiccans that I have met while in the service that are actually CA's themselves so its not uncommon. Also, there are no mandates that require an individual to be a believer to be a CA but yes there are individuals still in our career field that do not practice what they preach if you get my drift...

As for the females I would have to agree somewhat, I actually work with 3 here now at Randolph but I would not say they are the best I have seen =P

Wow that is very unfortunate for you. Frown The one that gave my FTAC briefing was easy on the eyes you could say. Doesn't sound like a bad career field to get into now, does it? Wink

Just for curiosity, why would an atheist want to be a Chaplain's Assistant? You would think it would be annoying to be steeped in religious work up to your ears if you were annoyed by religion.

Not everyone who joins the Army wants to be a killer, but they still join the Army for what it has to offer. By this I mean you don't have to relate to a job to do it. Sort of like a sexual therapist. They are there to help others, but don't have to be freaks, pedophiles, or nymphomaniacs.

I am a Humanist. It is form of Aethism. I believe you do things for people and humanity to do the right thing, not for the salvation a religion promises after death for being good. To me I would do it because it makes others feel better. It is work that has to be done, so I could do it though I don't believe in a higher being.

Thanks for the honest repsponse Boyhitscar. On a side note, I spent the last three weeks at Randolph. Awesome base. Great gym and very friendly people everywhere.

I don't know about you guys but I am 1000000% seriously going to try and cross train into being a chaplain assistant on my 3 year mark since I enlisted for 4 years. I am active in the Chapel I know just about every Chaplain here on base and knew the Wing Chaplain before he retired and I plan on getting to know the new Wing Chaplain. I also know a couple of the Chaplain assistants in the Chapel so when my 3 year mark comes up I will be able to get all the goods about cross training and if need be probably a couple recomendations from the Chaplains here. If I am still at this base in 2 years when my 3 year mark is here.
