Anyone have something more specific? I haven't been to San Antonio since I graduated BMT in 1984.

Why not the dining facility? They always ahve a spread and the colonels and chiefs on base serve you. I take my family there every year )at Offutt) and it is easy, cheap, and good food.

My $.02

He may have restrictions, so you can also go to the Enlisted Club if they have a spread. I am not sure of the rules for families and holidays at BMT. He will not be a graduate at that time, so things might be weird.

Congrats and thank you for supporting your son with his decision to join the Air Force. Make sure he gets you a Parent pin.....

We've already got permission to pick him up through Operation Homecooking basically it's an extra day of Town Pass for him and the other airmen who are lucky enough to have someone take them into their homes for the Holiday.

I was hoping someone local would see this and have a suggestion on where to go.

What kind of food are you looking for? San Antonio has a wide selection, so you are going to have to narrow it down if you want some suggestions. Rudy's BBQ or Ruth Chris? Does your hotel have a good restaurant?

We were there for Thanksgiving a few years ago surprisingly several restaurants were closed for Thanksgiving, it was not until we were in the hotel shuttle headed to the Riverwalk for dinner that we found out this bit of bad news, I ran back up to our room and started calling around trying to make reservations only to find out most things were already booked OR we had waited til too late in the day and most things were getting ready to wind down (prolly 3:30-4:00...I think)

You are wise to start making your plans now! If I had it to all over again I would definitely make reservations at one of the nicer hotel buffets or I would call a restaurant you might have in mind to insure that they will be open

We eventually had what I would describe as one of the most memorable Thanksgivings to date...from the first moment we got on the shuttle our driver suggested we attend the "community" dinner...It was truly amazing...an experience I will take with me forever...funny how our last resort became such a great family memory...we would NEVER have done this if our driver hadn't been so persistent...still I would opt for the swanky hotel buffet if given the choice lol!

Good luck with making your plans!

We're really just looking for a decent place thats open for a Thanksgiving, other than the normal chains something more exclusive to the area, The gateway is open that day for a buffet but I would really rather give hime a few hours away from BMT to relax a bit and enjoy the day. I couldn't fina nay info on the "community dinner" you speak of beamersmom, a little help?

Not sure what your price range is, Bohanan's or Boudrou's for steak, La Hacienda de Los Barrios for Mexican, Rudy's BBQ for BBQ. You will need to check to see if any of them are open on Thanksgiving.

Any idea how much you are wanting to spend on your meal? Are you staying near the Riverwalk?

In regards to the "community dinner"...I am speaking of the Raul Jiminez Community Dinner...it is the largest community dinner in the US...the dinner is intended to provide for seniors...believe me I felt as if we had absolutely no business attending this dinner, whenever I say it was with an incredible amount of urging from the shuttle driver...I am probably understating the amount of pressure he put on us to attend...I believe this is probably the first party I have EVER crashed! LOL!

I mentioned the fact that it was "one of the most memorable Thanksgivings to date"...I would like to explain what I meant by that...we walked into the Civic Center that day somewhat disappointed that we had missed out on our swanky hotel buffet...we didn't eat a meal like we would have eaten had we been at home...what made that Thanksgiving so special for us was the fact that for the first time in a very long time we were given the luxury of slowing down enough to realize how much we truly have to be thankful for...unlike so many of the years past when I was up before dawn preparing for our family dinner and trying to entertain 24+ ppl it was just US ...me, my husband and our daughter...we witnessed so many acts of kindness and the sense of community was absolutely overwhelming...that experience was truly "good medicine " for us.

Sorry for such a long post...I felt like I needed to explain myself a bit...now, I will see if I can give you a bit of advice...we ate out a LOT the weekend of our new Airmans graduation, as a matter of fact I think that is ALL we did...I will venture to guess that either on Fri or Sat you will go to the Riverwalk (I wouldn't miss it) there are a ton of restaurants there (every one we ate at was very good) maybe Powerpro has good advice when he suggests one of the more popular chain buffets for Thanksgiving day, leaving your sense of adventure for the rest of the visit with your new Airman...at least you wouldn't have to deal with the stress of "is it open or not?"

Also, you might want to check the news paper in SA as soon as you get into town...many of the restaurants and hotels will advertise their Thanksgiving menu and prices.

Again, good luck with your plans...and Congratulations to your Airman!

I've harnessed the power of Google combining key words like Thanksgiving and San Antonio. Oh what wonderful locations were displayed to me Big Grin Beer

actually there have been lots of great suggestions so far! if you want a restaurant/buffet Golden corral would be a good place to good. They have decent food for a good price and they are all over the city. He will have to stay within 30 miles of the base but thats easy enough to do!
maybe this will help?

I dont know how many people are in your party but you could always just order food and have a nice family dinner in your hotel room!

its geared more for people who live here but its helpful for after graduation when they can wander around base but still cant go off base yet.
