Any way to avoid the flu and penicillin shots? I "don't believe" in shots.. I've never had the flu, why would I want to take a shot that's going to give it to me? Thanks.
No way to avoid them, unless you can prove you're allergic to the serum.
If you don't believe in shots, don't join. You will be getting them on a regular basis. You will be required to get a flu shot every year, and refusing to get it can lead to punitive action against you.
WOW.. Talk to me like I'm 5 why don't you? My mama didn't teach me that. I DID. All I ever hear is how people get sick after flu shots, especially family members. All I ever get is a mild "cold" maybe once a year for a week or so. I guess it's childish of me to think I don't need a flu shot or penicillin shot? I never thought not wanting shots meant someone shouldn't join.. To make things simple, I try to avoid putting any drugs in my body besides the crap that may be in food. If I have to get them, I wlll. and Calcas, I grew up believing what I wanted to, not what everyone told me. What I learn from personal experience. (Which in fact has made me a pretty good person.) So if I have been fine without getting vaccinations all my life, I see no reason to get them now. But I guess there is no avoiding it... Thank you..
14613821-It's all in your best interest when you go through the living conditions/environment at BMT and Tech. You will be living in very close quarters and exposed to many different viruses. This is only to protect you. You may have been fine up to this point, but that doesn't mean you are immune. I have had the flu shot many times and have never gotten sick from it. I actually believe it's either a coincidence or "all in your head' when people say the flu shot made them sick.
If you go overseas, you will be required to get other vaccinations also, such as small pox and anthrax.
It's just part of the process and again, it's for your protection. Good luck!
Like I said, If I have to get them, I will. I'm not afraid of shots, I would just prefer not to take them. Nor will I think I'll be any match for a TI.
Yes, The best way to avoid them is not to join. You will be getting shots the whole time you are in the AF and as said before you can have action taken against you if you refuse.
And just to remove any doubt, everyone in my flight got sick in basic at some point. With that many guys living in that close of quarters, it is inevitable. If it eases your mind a little, they didn't give my shots witha needle. They used the air gun to inject them. Don't know if they still do.
I'm going to basic in a week and I hope everyone I am there with gets their shots. The last thing I want is for some rebel to get sick and puke and **** all over the place, then one of us lucky ones gets told to clean it up because they are too sick to do it.
I dont like shots either because I remember after I had to get a hepatits shot at my military acadamy I got really sick, and I mean REALLY SICK I mean so sick if I hadnt of done anything myself I wouldnt have gotten better. All the doctors said there was nothing wrong they could see but they didnt know what it was and they wouldnt listen to me when I told them I got sick right after I got this shot. In the end I stopped trusting shots, and I treat any problems myself. At least I wont have to get the hepatits shot again
Caninedale, Nah, I have no problem with needles. I'm one of those people who can watch their blood get drawn.. As long as I haven't been fasting for 24 hours haha. rossdking, What you said is exactly what I mean, I don't trust the shots. I don't think I have had one since I was a baby and I rarely ever get sick. Sometimes everyone in my house gets sick besides me haha. I just think shots are rediculous for the most part.
Never being sick is not necessarily a good thing in this situation. Usually the more you've been exposed to and had, the more immunity you build up. You can't compare it to your home living environment.
Getting sick at BMT is no joke. Last Summer, while my daughter was there, everyone was getting a virus and one young girl ended up dying from it. You get worn down, stressed and even the most minor thing can become a big deal. It is best if you come down with something (especially a cough) to go to sick call and get a cold pack to nip it in the bud before it gets worse. So many are afraid to go to sick call because they don't want to go to the 319th, but if you don't take care of it, you can guarantee a reservation in the 319th.
LaurensMom is right. Alot of times that sickness is taken to Tech School with you also. My daughter was very sick at BMT graduation. Our whole family mananged to catch the virus from her and we were sick once we got home. She didn't feel well most of Tech School either.

My answer was based more on attitude than it was on your beliefs. Vaccinations (along with a great many other things) are mandatory when you are in a military service. There will be a lot of things that you either don't believe in or don't like that you are going to have to do. I find it disheartening that when faced with something of this nature, too many people try to find a way out instead of doing what's required of them.
My fiance, who has been sick maybe twice in the entire five years I've known him, was sick for the first week or two of basic. When we went to visit him and watch his graduation, he was getting sick again. He never got sick before but he had something almost all the way through basic. (He said he took more Advil those 6 weeks than he ever has.)
WOW. Sounds like basic training is uh, Hm. I don't really even know. I don't know, I have been around people with the flu etc.. and never got sick from it, I just assume I have a strong immune system. That and positivity about not getting sick haha. Never know though. Just have to wait and see. I still think those shots may have something to do with a lot of it.
Gil_Nelson - Do you really think because people don't want to take shots it's them trying to find a way out of what's "required" of them? I mean, for some people who never have done any drugs, don't get vaccines, and barely even take aspirin, not getting a shot is just another day in their life. Not trying to find a way out of what's required. I can understand other things you know, but not putting some random drugs in your body. I personally feel proud. I don't feel like I'm trying to find a way out of what is required for me.

No, you DON'T really know and you don't seem to be "getting" what we are trying to say. Nobody WANTS to be sick and your immune system goes out the door the first week of BMT.
The fact is the shots are a requirement and either you want to join or you don't.
