I can tell my recruiter truly loves the Air Force, and the whole Air Force family, from the lowly recruit all the way up to the top. He shares some stories with me all the time--it never gets old!

So I pose you all with this question: what is it that you love about the Air Force? I love hearing these stories. It helps pass the time reading about them. Smile

Just in case you haven't figured it out, yet, you're gonna find people who love the AF, and some who don't.

I'm one of those who did. I had two great careers in the Blue Suit: almost 11 years enlisted, and another 13 years as an officer. What I loved about the Air Force was the people. And, the thing I hated most about the Air Force was the people. The good news is that the really bad apples usually don't last. When you're on active duty, there are going to be people that you really like: they're just great folks to be around, they do their job well, and they go above and beyond what they're required to do. The bad news is that eventually those folks are going to leave; hopefully, they'll be back-filled with someone who is just as good.

You'll make some really good friends--the kind that lasts a lifetime. And there will be some genuine skidmarks, the kind who could ruin any kind of a good day. The good news is they'll eventually leave, too.

For my money, the first kind far out-numbered the others. I hope the same thing works out for you.

Happy to be here, proud to serve.

Thanks for the great input. I'm assuming that this will be like anything else in life; you get from it what you put in. I'm definitely giving this my all in preparation and intend on continuing that trend once I (finally) put those blues on.

For the most part, everyone I've talked to loves the Air Force. Sure some don't exactly love their job or maybe their location isn't exactly what they wanted, but the general consensus is that they love the Air Force and all I has done for them. Among veterans, many of them share a lot of cool stories and say if they could have served longer, they would!

I'm not worried about running into a few complainers now and then. That's just the way the game works. How you can complain about something that offers so many benefits though will never make sense to me.

Overall, I just can't wait!

Like the major said, it's the people, both good and bad. Really once you get past the initial enlistment, the air force breaks down into two groups of folks, the good and bad. There isn't much of a middle ground anymore.

The bad folks stay in because so long as they complete the minimum requirements no one can really do anything to them and they do next to nothing and collect a paycheck each month. Laziness and stupidity win these folks minds

Likewise, good folks stay in because they have an opportunity to excel due to the laziness of the bad folks that stay in. They excel, shine and have a feeling of self worth.

Add to that full medical & dental benefits, retirement at 20 years (seriously, what civilian job lets you retire at 38?). Personally, I want to retire as an E-9 with 30 years but still, 20 years is an option. I get paid to PT! Free room & board (I spent WAAAAYY too many years as a poor college student to not appreciate this & the medical/dental). Hopefully, down the road, I'll get around to my Master's and they'll pay for that too. And hundreds of dollars every year to buy CLOTHES! Days off for doing my job well, donating blood, scoring well on my CDCs, or just because there's a blizzard & none of it counts against my leave AND I'm still getting paid. Oh yeah, and a raise every year, maybe even two.
