I've decided to enlist in the Air Force reserves while doing collage for a year or two, and have a general idea on how the next phase of my life is going to fan out. However, I know only a few details, so please point out anything stupid I'm doing, or answer some of my questions to get an opinion other then my recruiter's.

This summer I'll enlist in the reserves for two years. In that time I'll do one or two years of collage, depending on; How long does the enlistment process take? I've heard that after I see a recruiter it takes 4-6 months for me to get "called up". Does that mean that the recruiter will send me home and I'll wait around for several months, and eventually a gruff voice over the phone will tell me to report to such and such base for Basic Training tomorrow morning? Would someone tell me the order and time between in which things will happen (ASVAB, Basic Training, all that). Also, will the time between the day I sign a paper at the recruiter's office, if that's how I enlist, count as time in the reserves?

Here's a concern of mine; I would like to do 2 years of collage, but I'm concerned that my time won't overlap all my time in collage correctly, which would suck since I'm depending on the reserves to pull me through collage. This is complicated by the question I have above. Will I have to do twice as much time in the reserves as collage to guarantee the benefits through collage? In this case I'd stick with a single year.

If I were to enlist much longer then Intend to spend in collage, could I switch to active duty? I've heard of opportunities to volunteer, but that's it. If I can switch over at any time, I'd sign up for 6 years of reservist time and just switch over whenever I'm done with collage. What's the truth of it, how likely am I to be able to switch to active duty, and how long can I stay active duty for the remainder of my service?

I have a few general less important questions I forgot to ask the recruiter last I spoke to him, if anyone happens to know.
How long will I have to serve in the summer? Can I choose when? I'm thinking about doing it between semesters.

Thanks. Roll Eyes It would be a lot easier to know what I can give to the Air Force once I know what I can give, and what when certain things will be required.

Is going active duty your ultimate goal? Reason I ask is because there might be other options that would make more sense...

I don't know if your plan is workable, but I do know this:

"Collage" is a type of art. "College" is an educational institution.

Thanks all. Last I checked there was a 2 year enlistment program, which surprised me.

I guess I'll just need to talk it over with my recruiter and take my best guess.
