I took half the day off today from work because I was finally able to find someone to watch the kids so my wife and I could go meet with a recruiter. The only problem is... I went to three different recruitment centers and could find no one to talk to... Bad Carma? I hope not. I still have the outstanding question... How long must you wait to retake the ASVAB if you decide you want or need a higher score to qualify for certain jobs? Any advise on when the best time is to catch a recruiter in the office without an appointment? I ask the second question because I have very little free time with work and kids and when i do get a free moment I do not want to waste it going to an empty office.. haha. Oh well. To those who are aware of me, I am proud to report that i broke below 250 on Thursday night after my 3 mile run and I am continually, yet slowly and healthily dropping. I still maintain that i should be at or close to 200 within the next 4 or 5 months.

First of all, what time did you go? Fridays are sometimes half days for recruiters, but for those busy ones, they are out and about meeting people.

ASVAB, 30 day wait after first failure, 30 day wait after 2nd failure, 180 day wait after 3rd failure. (No real failure, you don't meet the AF minimum standard). Once you get a passing score, I would recommend not re-testing. Reason? If you score lower, then you take the most recent score. You could eliminate jobs that you currently qualify for.

As for the best time to walk in without an appointment? Never... you should always make an appointment because a recruiter's time is extremely valuable. What takes the Army 3 people to cover, the AF uses one. So always set an appointment.

I noticed you mentioned weight. Until you are within the AF height/weight standards, you cannot set an appointment, do any paperwork, or test.

Keep up the progress and you will meet your goal. I don't mean to be brash, but the recruiter's world is extremely busy and taxing.

good luck to you.

Oh I understand completely the task, responsibility, and hectic pace a recruiter keeps. Both my dad and my brother have done their time as one.. but this was many years ago. My only issue is that i have a bit of a time restraint seeing as how I have a year and a month of eligibility left. My reasoning is that if I am confident Iwill make weight, why not go ahead and get the ball rolling with the simple stuff such as taking the ASVAB and starting on the preliminary "Application" type paperwork. I especially see this as benefitial seeing as from what I hear the Air Force has been pushing back or setting ship out dates for 8 to 10 months or longer after being sworn in. I ain't got that kind of time once I make weight. Know what I mean?

I totally understand. However, we are human. I have seen this before... you make weight, work hard and qualify to make yourself eligible. You have a family and are very excited about joining. It might have taken you this long to want to join, but you are trying hard and WILL make weight.

So, you make weight, have a limited amount of time to leave. The average person takes 3-6 months to leave, but let say you don't have that kind of time. We will get you to boot camp before you are too old. If you qualify at 27 and will turn 28 soon, they will get you out.

So, keep your head up, work hard, and they will get you out. Just keep this in mind... you will need to be really flexible on the jobs you are willing to take.

You work hard and qualify, we will work hard to get you in. But again, you cannot start any part of the process now because right now, you are not qualified.

A recruiter will not take their time to start a process that might not end up with an enlistment. You need to be qualified before ink hits the paper. Make sense?

Not to mention, AF is getting strict about recruits and their physical health. It used to be that you had the time you were at BMT to get yourself to the point you can pass your final PT test. Not any more, you need to pass your FIRST PT test in order to stay at BMT. If you can not pas your first week PT test- your a$$ is heading home. This is coming from a visiting TI from Lackland that was at our base supervising our PT for the new recruits waiting to leave for BMT...needless to say there were some he called out in front of everyone in formation to point out that they couldn't either make the 1 1/2 mile run, do a decent push-up, or couldn't last with a one hour PT.

I just graduated from BMT and that is completely wrong!! You have to pass your final PT eval, if you don't pass they can recycle you one week back.

The point what the TI was making was a "scare tactic" and motivator for recruits to get themselves squared away before BMT. BMT isnt the place to start being physically fit, though some use it as that and go through the recycling process/get injuried, etc.

Call and make an appointment. If you get an answering machine, LEAVE A MESSAGE. They WILL call you back. I had to do that with my recruiter.
