I've heard from another site that recruiters turn something like 99% of people away. Of course this is an exageration, but are Air Force recruiters really turning people away?

I was surprised at how much easier it was when I first went to a recruiter, I know I qualify, but are they actually turning people away?

Note: For example, I thought Asvab requirements were in the 60's, apparently that's not even close to what it is.

First, I'll admit that I haven't talked with a recruiter recently, but I have exercised a little bit of critical thought. Seriously, have you noticed ANYTHING going on with the economy in the last year or so? With unemployment rate hovering at, or near, 10%, do you really think the Air Force can accommodate everyone who wants in? All the services' strength ceilings are set by Congress, and whatever number Congress says, is all the people the services can have on active duty.

So, yes. I wouldn't be at all surprised if AF recruiters are having to turn people away.

Well it seems like Recruiters are more likely to put people on waiting lists now from what I have heard.

I was honest to my recruiter at the beginning, and said if you honestly can't get me in, please let me know now so I can walk over to the Army station next door. But she didn't, so I will have to trust her. She did tell me they are being more selective now though, and again I told her to be honest and upfront with me, so we'll see how it goes! Thanks.

Having worked in a MEPS even though it was a long time ago, I can tell you a lot of people can't get into the Air Force because they are very selective in who they let in. Test scores, past legal problems, financial problems, etc. Other services are less selective and will even waiver these problems as they have a harder product to sell.

I was in the other day, and the recruiter didn't say anything about turning people away. But he did say that if i signed up now, i would be looking at shipping out around February or March. So i think it's more of a delay thing.

Though really i wouldn't be surprised if they were being more strict like with criminal background , asvab scores etc.

Weak Economy Draws Middle-Class Recruits
"The Department of Defense announced last week that for the first time since the draft ended and the all-volunteer force began 36 years ago, every service branch and reserve component met or exceeded its recruiting goals, both in numbers and quality, in the fiscal year that ended Sept. 30."
Think the AF is tough? Try Coast Guard. They've always been selective.

80%+ of the general population is not qualified to join the Army. All we do is turn away fatties, dummies, dropouts, and druggies.

You would really be suprised what we go through trying to find someone qualified. And we take lower ASVAB scores that the AF.

I'm not gonna throw any rocks at our Green Suit brethren, Sarge. But, I worked closely with the aviation community at Ft. Campbell for almost 14 years--at Company, Battalion, Brigade, and Division level, including a year in Iraq embedded with the headquarters staff. I was often surprised by the unique "challenges" in dealing with some of the folks, supposedly some of the Army's best and brightest. But I loved their dedication and enthusiasm, especially the Joe Snuffies at the working level, who were doing the best they could with what they had to work with.

Wow. Of course a lot of this is probably due to age restrictions, or is this population in the target age range (17-42 year olds)?

I have heard that recruiters are turning away more "job specific" recruits. Almost everyone thats enlisting nowadays is either going to be in the DEP for six months or is going in open general. Contracts are still out there, they are just a bit more hard to find at this point in time. Even I had to DEP for 5 months.
