Alright, so I'm trying to compose a list of AFSC's before going to Meps. I am looking for something that I'm qualified for & that will be challenging, possibly as a career.
Please feel free to critique my list and suggest something that I don't have yet. My ASVAB scores qualified me for all jobs but I have a moral waiver which disqualifies me from anything with a Security job code of F, (this means no Crypto, Intel, Tech Specialist, etc.) So anyways, here is the list I've composed so far. 1) Weather Tech - Pretty high ASVAB requirement and a long tech school (8 months) makes this seem like a pretty good job. 2) Logistics - Highest Admin asvab score needed. I have heard this is an important job at least in other branches. 3) Avionics - Seems pretty interesting. 4) Space Systems - Trying to gather more info but seems very technical. Note: I'm also aware of PMEL but seems a little boring to me. I don't know why. Could be a good choice though. Any inputs greatly appreciated. Thanks! |

I've talked with a couple folks that were military PMEL which most of the time you find civilians. I dont think there is much overseas action in this careerfield and deployments, well you wont deploy as PMEL but instead end up working as a TCN escort. |

PMEL would also open doors for several different civilian careers after the Air Force.
Happy to be here, proud to serve. |

i would say logistics is the weakest option in your list (not slamming logistics people by any means). the other jobs can be more varied in their work I know some loggi people who say it gets extremely monotomus what is YOU interest in? do you like technical side of things, do you like admin. go off what your interested in over what requires the higgest asvab score |

I personally don't recommend Weather Tech. The training is great and it is a very important job, however, the USAF has taken the "work" portion out of the job. Weather Techs don't really do anything weather related anymore, other than pass along warnings, pass along PIREPs, and send weather information to ATC and command post. The USAF has come rely too heavily on technology, such as the FMQ-19. Half the time the thing gives bad readings or doesn't work at all.
I have heard several pilots say "the FMQ-19 is going to be the cause of a horiffic air accident one day." Its a job that gets more technical overseas and in remote locations but from what I understand is that in the US bases, they really set you up for failure with the heavy use of machines that often give fowl readings and the inability to let the Weather techs do weather reports by hand. The Wx guys here are ONLY allowed to use the machine read weather reports for offical weather use, even when its a perfectly clear and sunny day, but the equipment reads "3 miles visability and overcast conditions at 1000 feet." What sense does that make? I do imagine it could open doors in the civilian sector tho. Good luck! -Dotson |

if you want a real challenge be an air traffic controller. it is one of the toughest jobs in the military and you can make over 120k in the civilian world working for the faa and in overseas areas
