(I posted this in another part of the forums, but figured I would post it here too..)
I have a question for everyone. My husband is in basic training for the AF. I received a "DD Form 1172" in the mail, along with some info about tricare. The DD Form 1172 is the form to get the uniformed services identification card, right? The closest base is about an hour away, so I was wondering when I go to get this, what do I bring? What types of ID and things should I take? Will this enroll me in Tricare at that time? Oh, and is the Uniformed Service ID the same as just a spouses military ID? And if not, when will I get that?
Sorry for all the questions. Smile Thanks!!

That's right.

You will need two types of picture ID. It probably would be a good idea to take your social security card.

The Uniformed Service ID is the spouses ID card. Since you have received the application, you should already be enrolled in DEERS and Tricare. However, it can't hurt to ask while you are getting your ID card.

I suggest you find the website for the base where you will be getting your ID card and find the number for the military personnel office. Usually, you can call and make an appointment to get your ID card. Otherwise, you will spend a lot of time waiting for an open slot. The people at the personnel office should be able to answer your questions.

Don't feel bad about asking questions. While I was at basic, my wife got her ID card and then took our daughter to the clinic for an ear infection. After she was treated, my wife asked them where she needed to go to pay for the appointment! She quickly learned about military life and tried to help other new wives whenever she could.

And you can go to an Army post, or Navy or Marine base to get an ID if they are closer to you. Or even a National Guard facility. Someone posted a list of all the places you can go, but I can't remember where it is on this site.

And I agree about calling before you go as each facility has different hours and rules about what ID they will need you to bring.

You should be able to go to the Tricare website to verify that you are in the system.
