So here's the deal... I have a new level of determination to make this happen and I feel the only way to stay on track and keep the momentum and determination is to keep in touch here. Yes I am over weight and yes I have a little over a year left to make this all happen, but I have made leaps and bounds and will continue to until I get there. I have already lost about 30 pounds and hope to make weight in the enxt 4 to 6 months, if not sooner. I am a civilian police officer and I run every day I work after my shift. On the days I am off I do my push ups and sit ups and when I can I do my pull ups. I recently lost my running partner I have had for the last 6 months because he left our department to do contract work in the sands. However, me sergeant, whoch is a former Marine, has agreed to work with me and push me to new levels. I want this very badly and will come to all of you from time to time for answers. For instance, do any of you know what the availability is for flight crew type jobs? Yes, I could always got to Security Forces where there typically is always an opening. My dad is a retired Chief Master Sergeant and was in Security Forces and my brother just passed the test and is about to pin on Master Sergeant, so i guess you could say it runs in the family. But along with law enforcement I have also always had a passion for flying. My cousin is an aerial gunner but I am not sure how on board my wife would be with me doing that. Although she did recently make the comment that she would rather see me in the air than on the ground. Also, how hard is it to get into OTS as an enlistedman? I think I would definately like to see my career go that route if I can get my degree knocked out in time. I would greatly appreciate any and all input and/or feedback or advise any of you may have and I will absolutely keep in touch with my progress. Thanks in advance....

It seems like flight crew jobs are out there but are far & few between. You may be waiting for a while but since you have a steady job, you can probably afford to sit on it. Only the recruiter will know for sure. As for becoming an officer, OTS isn't the only option available if you are still working on your degree. There is a program where you remain on active duty and your job is to go to school (AECP) and then go to OTS. There are also 3 different programs where you are released from your active duty elisted contract to go to school and do ROTC. 2 of them provide a scholarship up to $15,000. The third doesn't have a scholarship but you will receive POCI (monthly stipend, books, etc.) Otherwise, yes, you can use Tuition Assistance to complete your degree while on active duty & apply to OTS. You still need to have a high GPA & a competitve/technical degree. You would not believe the number of kids who want to finish their degrees & become officers.
I have looked into a couple of these before but the only concerns I had is that I would have to be able to continue to provide for my family. I fI can't do that then those programs are no go for me. But I will talk to a recruiter and see what I can find out. Since I do have some time I am planning on getting in touch with a recruiter as soon as I get a day off, which will be in about a week and a half. There is an AF recruitment office in the city I work for, but I don't think it would be a good idea to go in there while in uniform... I don't want any of my Lt's, Capt. or my Maj or Chiref from finding out about this until i know for sure it is going to happen. Can we say Black balled career? haha...
