What are the possibilities of being recruited to IV without previous LE? I spent 5 years in the Coast Guard (AET) and am nearly finished with a degree in intelligence. Any room for negotiation?
Don't they require new recruits to go to FLETC to get training anyway?
Redphish, are you talking about coming in as a reserve IV? If so, you'll need prior police academy certification and at least the last 3 yrs. as a sworn civilian LE cop, Sheriff, Trooper, Agent, etc. If you're talking about active duty, you need to be an E-6 and submit a package after the solicitaion comes out in the spring. Yes,the active duty agents go to FLETC, but without some AD LE background the competition for selection can be a tough uphill climb.
Also, the civilian Agents are screened in a similar fashon. It partly comes down to money and assests. When you get down to it, the are about 150 full time (CIV/MIL) and up to 155 reserve Agents in the entire CG. It costs a fair amount of time and money to recruit and train a new Agent (regardless who they work for). The CG just doesn't have the deep pockets that DOD does, nor do we have the sheer numbers of candidates to select from. Couple that with the fact that having some prior experience can give you an idea of a person's suitability for this line of work. I can't think of any police dept. that hires Detectives right off the street... they are promoted from within the ranks after gaining experience (and there are no books that can do that).
Why not put your intelligence degree to good use and go IS?
A friend of mine lateraled to reserve IS recently and when the Oct SWE results came out, was actually bumped up one grade, and will advance to that grade on 1 Jan.
It seems there are always more advancement opportunities with new ratings, and IS may fit you better.
The last IV we hired last spring is both an investigator with his agency and on the local FBI JTTF already. The one we just interviewed for an open position in our office is a detective with his agency and already in the CGR. Both are certified LEO's with more than three years on the job. That is mandatory for being an IV.
I am heading off to NDIC this August for the MSSI program, graduating in late July/early August 09. Does the FLETC training start exactly in June? Technically I will be tour complete in 09, but will not graduate until after the FLETC training starts if that is the case.

Active duty special agents advance in their primary ratings. Once they have two years as an Agent, they can apply for INV, the Warrant specialty for CGIS.

Good luck!
Thank you JerryG! I haven't updated my profile in a while...I'm an E-6.
Just found out that the 3 year Intel payback tour you must complete after graduation from NDIC and a CGIS billet are not one in the same, therefore I must complete my payback tour before I can apply for CGIS. Looks like I will have to wait a few years...
