I am active duty in the CG and planning/hoping to join CGIS.

I am active duty with 9 years in. I was prior AMT and now I am an IS with a TS-SCI clearance. I have never been in trouble in my career and my marks are pretty good. I am an E-6 with a BA degree in CJ. I talked to an agent not too long ago and he mentions that the most important part was the interviews. I have dedicated my last 6 years to finish college and build the best resume I can to start my application for an 1811 position. I was assign to an OPBAT deployment team (working with DEA) for 5 years and now I lateral over IS to get the Intel experienced and the TS clearance. I have dedicated a lot of time to make my application stand above all the other ones. This is not just an application, I am completing for the most important career move I probably do in my career. And is hard for me to understand that we as Coasties will be fighting for the same AD positions and the most important thing is the interviews.

Anyone out there can give me some pointers as far as what CGIS is looking for? If the application is open to all rates, how an HS or YN can compete with an MK or BM with hands-on LE experience? Knowing someone in the CGIS program may help your chances? Is an active duty CGIS an 1811 also? Last one and probably the most important; what do CGIS do in a normal month? What I want to know is do CGIS work in the streets with other agencies? Is it more like office job or is active in investigations out there? What is the advantage of CGIS over other agencies? I started the process for DEA and ATF, but with the time I got in the CG, I rather stay as an agent in CGIS.

Where did you go? Why aren't you a member of Mil.com anymore?

I can't answer your questions, on-line or off-line, if you aren't around anymore.

Sorry.

The message is already out for this year, look up ALCGENL 023/09.

You've got until the end of this month to start the process, if you are tour complete next summer. Check out the message for further details.

Good luck!

CoastiePR,

I applied last year (2009 solicitation). I made it through to the interview and eventually was not selected. I think my 15 years of service scared them away from me. They may have thought that investing the money into the training for someone who would possibly seperate after one tour wasn't worth it. Anyway, I was told by the Special Agent In Charge at my interview that I was one of the better interviews that he had conducted that year.

I'm not sure that putting too much faith in the interview is entirely correct. Don't get me wrong, it is important. it's your chance to sit down with other agents and convince them you would be good at this type of work. Alot of emphasis is put on decision making, maturity, professionalism, verbal and writing skills. You have a degree so I would assume the verbal and writing won't be a problem for you.

By your personal information that you provided it sounds like you are exactly what they are looking for.

To answer your question about BM and MK vs other rates, They want mature professionals that are self starters. Any LE experience you may or may not have is irrelevant. They will send you to FLETC and you will be taught at least what you need to know to get your career started. I doubt you'll meet any agent that says they know "everything" they need to know. They really seemed unimpressed when I told them about the tons of cocaine I've siezed while a member of TACLET or the BWI arrests I've made at all of my Stations.

Also, it is my understanding that you won't be a GS1811. You remain at your current paygrade. I do understand that the chance for IV CWO is a good possibility.

Lastly, (and maybe a current agent or JerryG could tell you more), I understand that different offices under different Special Agents in Charge are run differently. Your first field office may encourage you to do "local ops" with local agencies. Where as your buddy that graduated FLETC with you reports to his first office and finds out that the SAC only concentrates on CG business.

I highly recommend anyone who meets the criteria to apply. Hey, even if I wasn't selected it was a great experience.

Hope any of this helps and good luck!

P.S. I heard that speaking a foreign language gives you a little boost above the competition.

Thanks a lot for your help. I understand better why they may select anyone from any rate since you will still have to attend to FLETC. Anyway, thanks alot, I guess I'm just getting a little anxious. Thanks again.

Any tips for the interview?

The interview process is sort of a test, and asking for the answers in advance is sort of like cheating.

Take it for what its worth... Wink

Regarding 1811 status: Under 14 USC 95, all CGIS agents have exactly the same authority, jurisdiction, etc.

The "-1811" is a job classification within the federal govertment system - "criminal investigator." You'll find 1811's in most of the federal agencies.

Reserve CGIS agents may not have "-1811 status", but they have the same authority, jurisdiction, etc. as both the civilian and AD military CGIS agents.

And once you come on board and get some time under your belt, you will get an opportunity to put in a Warrant packet for the INV Specialty.
