I was fortunate enough to meet Lt Mitchell here in Florida while working on his boat at a local marina - one helluva nice guy and a pleasure to hear the story in person from one of the men who accomplished this monumentally important task .
To call this an assassination is just so much more liberal crap. It is revisionist history that attempts to put America in a bad light. The Japanese Admiral was a combatant in a legal war, was in uniform, in a war zone and shot down by American forces in uniform in a war zone. We could have missed him, he could have been wounded and survived or sufferred any of the other fortunes of war. He was no more assassinated than any other GI who went into combat and didn't come back. What's wrong with you people??

What's wrong with you? Did you miss your nap? Why don't you shut up with that "liberal crap" crap. I haven't seen where anyone has disputed the facts of the shootdown, or the necessity of it or that it was justified. Playing semantics to interject your political views on this is assinine. And who the hell are you calling "you people"? We all served, bud, so "you people" is you.

I totally agree with you. My uncle was killed on the USS Oklahoma. Why don't these liberals who never served, never had some family member killed during WWII or any other war try and fit into our shoes. I'm a Viet Nam Vet who had a draft number of 2. Because of a heart murmur, it took me one year to pass a physcial but I WANTED to join and serve in our Navy. My dad had tried to join the Navy after Pearl Harbor to avenge his older brother's death but failed the physical due to a previously broken leg in addition to his working in the lumber industry. His younger brother served on 2 ships which were both sunk and he survived in both cases.
I spent two tours in Nam, the 1st was for 6 months in 1971 and the 2nd was during the evacuation of Saigon during Operation Frequent Wind in 1975.
Getting back to the decision to get Yamamoto, it WAS the right thing to do. Don't these idiots think that the Japanese would have done the same thing to General MacArthur or Admiral Nimitz. Not only am I glad they did that but it was also the correct thing in bombing Hiroshima and Nagasaki which resulted in the Japanese surrender to finally end WWII.
My dad was a Liberal Democrat. He served in WW II as a Coxswain on LCI(L) 43, putting troops on beaches in No. Africa, Italy and Sicily. (He survived the war but was killed at home in a fire in 1947.) Imagine, a Liberal Democrat, serving his country, in combat. I'll bet you'd label him a Liberal rather than a combat vet. Do you think that, because he was a Democrat, he should have given back his bronze stars before he died? BTW, my brothers served (Air Force & Navy) in Korea, and my sons served in the Gulf War (Navy) and Operation Desert Storm (USMC), and I served on a Tin Can in the late 50s. I think we've done pretty well in serving our country. We're all Democrats, though not very Liberal. We're Moderates. We refrain from labeling people. Sticking labels on people, merely because they may disagree with your political philosophy, is a sign of ignorance. We're just happy being loyal Americans.
